Extension and Assimilation of the Franchise Debate

In the House of Commons on February 20 1832 the Hon. Locke King urged leave to introduce a bill making county and borough franchise equal by extending voting rights to occupiers of tenements valued at £10 a year. Lord John Russell and others weighed reforms and criticized county representation while Cobden warned of peril if the discrepancy persisted amid ongoing county elections and free trade tensions.
