Progress of the movement on land reform and franchise
Speakers denounce the landed class monopoly on land and public offices. They urge a broadening of suffrage, warn of continued oppression under the current system, and pledge to push a practical reform plan before Parliament as a national movement advances.
National Freehold Land Society celebrates first anniversary
At its first anniversary meeting on November 29 1850 the National Freehold Land Society reports 5029 shares held by 2824 members and total funds of £21257 16s 10d. Fourteen estates worth £62000 across multiple towns have been purchased for member distribution, with 207 allotments paid in full and 175 on subscription plans. Net surplus stands at £496 18s 6d, enabling a planned £5 per cent credit to members by year two. The directors propose abolishing fines on unadvanced shares, allowing immediate participation after first subscription, and cutting advance interest from 6 1 4 to 5 per cent, with changes to be put to two member meetings. They plan offices and staff expansion to handle growth. The report frames the movement as both political enfranchisement and social reform, promoting thrift and provident habits, while continuing as a profitable vehicle for savings and land allotments. Signed by Henry Elkington.
