Calf Feeding Plans For Finish Next Spring
Calves to be finished for baby beeves next March should start feeding before losing milk fat. Dry pastures mean oats. cooler weather adds corn and cotton seed meal. Weaning should follow a grain diet to avoid weight loss. Start with oats, then add corn, then cotton seed meal as weight increases. For 350 to 400 pounds add meals gradually to reach about one pound daily. A full feed calf may take two pounds grain per 100 pounds weight. For a 400 pound calf typical daily: 4 pounds oats, 1 pound cotton seed meal, 3 pounds corn. for a 500 pound calf 4, 1, and 5 pounds, oats and meal fixed, corn rises with weight. Notify county agent to start calves for a good finish next spring.
