L. M. Baze of Security State Bank was named chairman of Gillespie County Defense Stamping Bond Sales to replace Postmaster R. W. Klingelhoefer. He announced a list of committee members and aims to promote the program and keep citizens informed while coordinating with agencies selling stamps and bonds.
Gillespie County peace officers are invited to a six day intensive civilian defense training course in San Antonio starting December 1. The program, organized by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, targets selected local law enforcement personnel to foster a coordinated emergency response system. The first session runs daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Menger Hotel through December 6.
The captive coal mine strike ended with an arbitral agreement to submit the dispute to a board appointed by the President. Steelman chaired, Lewis served, and Benjamin F. Fairless of United States Steel was the third member. The dispute began November 17 over a union shop in captive mines and sympathy strikes spread to commerce, affecting steel production for defense.
Drivers and chauffeurs licenses are issued weekly Monday 8 to 12 and Saturday 8 to 5 at the Courthouse. State Patrolman Whitehorn handles procedures from the Commissioners Court room. Renewals for 1936 licenses are postponed until after April 1 1942 and June 30 1942 for those holding license numbers 450 000 or lower.
Gillespie County selectees who passed their physicals will be inducted January 6, 1942, likely sending 15 men to the January call the highest number yet. The local board also notes former enlisted men with eleven months service may enlist in the National Guard or Enlisted Reserve Corps.
Mr and Mrs Udo Schellhase stay several days with Mrs Max Schoenewolf. Mr and Mrs Herman Gold of Converse and Miss Bertha Gold of San Antonio visited relatives here Sunday.
Gillespie County opens quail hunting and trapping seasons on December 1 with quail bag limit of 12 per day and 36 per week. Season runs to January 16 for quail and January 31 for trapping. Bearing traps require a resident trapper license. no special quail license is needed.
Motor vehicle owners lacking a Certificate of Title must obtain one before January 1. The State Highway Department bans using un titled vehicles on public roads after that date and license numbers require a Title. Bring bill of sale or pre October 1 1939 license receipt to prove ownership. titles take 10 to 30 days. Contact Tax Assessor Petmecky for details.
The Fredericksburg area endured a cold snap with temperatures dipping to 26 degrees Monday and 24 degrees Tuesday. Wind chills likely added to the frigid start of the week as residents bundled up for the morning chill.
Freddie Saenger, son of Mr and Mrs Felix Saenger, departed Sunday for Dallas to enroll in an aeronautic training school in the city.
Mr and Mrs George Weber celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary with immediate family. They married November 22 1881 at St Marys Church with Rev Tarillion officiating. Living children include Rev A Weber Nada Texas Henry Adam Paul Eugene Ernst Weber Oswald Weber Lina Rosa and Augusta Weber. Mr Weber 86 Mrs Weber 77.
Fredericksburg Chamber of Commerce reports Santa Claus will visit on December 6 at 10 a.m. The Fredericksburg High School band will escort him from Kraus Corner to Nimitz Hotel and back to Courthouse Park. Final day to pay the first half of 1941 taxes before December 1 follows this week according to Tax Assr Coll W M Petmecky. Half the property tax plus full poll taxes can be paid now and the second half is due by June 30. No discount on first half payments, while a 2 percent discount applies to full payments in November.
A drunken wayfarer, after accepting a ride from Sheriff Klaerner, was found wobbling on West Main Street with a high powered rifle and was taken to the county basement jail to regain his senses.
Mrs. Leroy Bonn will spend Thanksgiving in San Antonio. Mr. and Mrs. Rudi Kott will spend the holiday there with their daughters and families. Mr Kott will depart Friday morning for Pearsall on a hunting trip.
Dr. Lester Keyser Red Cross roll call chairman for Gillespie County issues a final plea for memberships and donations before December 5. He asks und contacted donors to leave gifts at the Schneider Building downtown this weekend and to report to his Fredericksburg Hospital office after November 29. He notes 550 memberships have been secured and emphasizes community responsibility.
Construction of the Continental Oil Company bulk plant at Fredericksburg is expected to finish within a week. A Fredericksburg agent has not yet been appointed. The plant will include a warehouse office building and three 12 000 gallon vertical storage tanks to meet rising demand and tourist traffic.
The Dental Health Show sponsored by the State Department of Health will visit Gillespie County schools December 1 and 2. Dentists from the county, with cooperation from school officials the Good Teeth Council for Children of Chicago and the county harness service present a dramatized program with music and humor to teach four dental health fundamentals.
