Recreation in Colonial Fredericksburg Wins Essay Prize
Andrew Alberthal’s essay explores Fredericksburg’s early recreation amid hardship. It recalls the first dance in a clapboard room with a violin from a runaway slave, dried apples for refreshments, and a community learning gaiety amid hunger and loss. The piece links colonial leisure to later conflicts including the 1847 treaty with the Comanches and Lippons, the Civil War, and Reconstruction, noting shifting priorities between preservation and recreation.
