Seniors in three county high schools will receive diplomas in commencements over two weekends starting Friday. Schedule lists Harper High May 24, St. Mary's May 26, and Fredericksburg High May 31 with locations Cafetorium church and stadium respectively.
Twenty six students graduate from St Marys High School with Very Rev James A Young as keynote speaker. A baccalaureate service precedes the 7 30 p m commencement at St Marys Catholic Church. diplomas will be presented by Msgr Erwin Juraschek with valedictorian Diana Knopp and salutatorian Paulette Bracatigam.
The Red Cross Bloodmobile visits Zion Lutheran Church Annex today until 7 p.m. with a 106 pint goal for this stop. Donor chairman Danny Leyendecker says the drive aims to meet or exceed quota after Januaryfell short by 18 pints and ahead of summer demand. The four visit annual goal is 424 pints, needing at least 124 pints this round.
Congressman C C Fisher announced a 50454 grant to Fredericksburg Child Development Agency for 12 months from June 1, 1974, to June 1, 1975. The program will provide full day preschool training for 40 low income children. Graduation exercises are slated for Friday May 24 at 10 a.m. at First Methodist Church.
Wayne Bell, renowned for historical restoration, will address the Gillespie County Historical Society and Historical Survey Committee at the annual membership banquet on Tuesday June 4 at 7 p.m. at the Sunday House Convention Center. He will discuss Historical Preservation in Texas with slides.
Fredericksburg launches a city drive to remove junk and scrap vehicles from streets and lots. A portable vehicle crusher will operate at the dump grounds on Cave Creek Road from June 1 to 6, inviting residents and owners to dispose of unwanted vehicles.
Fredericksburg High School will host college credit English courses this summer through the FISD Community Education Program with Schreiner Institute. Registration is May 30 at 3 p.m. at FHS, classes run June to late July two evenings a week from 6:30 to 9:30, cost 20 dollars per semester hour plus 10 dollar registration and textbooks.
Fredericksburg Independent School District approved final plans for the Area Vocational School Building on the Fredericksburg High School campus and called for bids by June 13. The project, near east of the band hall, measures 162 by 162 feet and targets completion for the 1975-76 year with $350,000 federal grant funding of the $625,000 estimate. Texas Education Agency oversight is noted, and federal funds are to be utilized by year end.
The 14th annual Musicale in the local junior high gym drew about 1000 attendees on May 18 as Fredericksburg High School Symphonic and Concert Bands along with the Junior High Band performed some 20 numbers. Awards went to standout members including Kenneth Ersch and Judy Oehler as Outstanding Boy and Girl Band members, Sandy Segner as FHS Band Sweetheart, Allen Tatsch as Most Improved Musician, and Joy Weinheimer and Kay Fishel as Outstanding Girl and Boy in the Junior High Band. Tom Rhodes directed the high school symphonic and junior high bands, with Wilburn Meier directing the high school Concert Band. Additional honors included Laurie Petermann receiving the Bob Semmiler Fine Arts Award and Mark Stroeher’s first place plaque in marching. Final appointments and new board member announcements will follow.
Tom C. Rhodes resigned as band director for Fredericksburg Independent School District after fourteen years. The statement from Superintendent Hans Bergner said the resignation takes effect at the end of May as Rhodes moves to a role with the University of Texas at Austin. Rhodes called his Fredericksburg tenure a career highlight and thanked the community for support since 1959.
Richard Prokopetz a 22 year old lineman from Fredericksburg working for Southwestern Industrial Electric Corporation on contract for Central Texas Electric Cooperative sustained extensive electrical burns in the Willow City area Friday at 11 am. He lost both arms above the elbow after contacting energized conductors while installing line extensions on the N H Greathouse ranch. A co worker Stefan Lasko revived him by mouth to mouth resuscitation and first aid kept him breathing until emergency crews arrived. He was treated at Hill Country Memorial Hospital and evacuated by helicopter to Brooke General Hospital Burn Center.
The public is invited to meet Robert Krueger a conservative Democratic candidate for Congress in the June 1 run off at a coffee event. The gathering is set for Saturday May 24 from 10 45 am to 12 30 pm at the Fredericksburg Fire Station. A 15 member local committee arranged the function to connect supporters with the candidate for the 21st Congressional seat.
