The Fifth Annual Harper Wool and Mohair Fleece Show is set for Saturday May 12 at Harper High School gym. Lions Club sponsors outline events including fleece displays boy’s judging contest and a noon barbecue with trophies awarded across sixteen divisions.
Alfred Petsch argues Fredericksburg locals hold a valuable near by park on Gillespie County airport land bought five years ago. Residents praise the potential, noting easy access via a paved highway and broad public use, with many declaring surprise at the site’s attractiveness. Continued on page 6.
Captain Joe Petsch, who reported to the U S Air Force at Kelly Field on Tuesday May 1, has been transferred to the Southern Procurement Office of the Air Force in Fort Worth, and this report comes Friday morning.
William Ryan Stuart 26 of Fort Worth died in a parked car six miles east of Fredericksburg on the Austin Highway at 1 a m Monday. Justice of the Peace Wm Bruns ruled the death a death by own action after an investigation with Sheriff Hugo Klaerner and others. Mrs Beulah Meurer of Fredericksburg said Stuart fired the fatal shot in his left temple after pulling to the roadside. The couple were en route to North Texas City. he had asked her to take him to Fort Worth. He worked for Mills Service Company and lived in a Fredericksburg tourist court. Burial planned in Dallas with Beckmann Funeral Home handling arrangements.
Captain Marvin Prochnow of the U S Air Force and his 16 month old daughter Karen are visiting relatives with his parents. He is stationed at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia and will return to duty at Langley Field. His wife Margie Langerhans is the daughter of Freddie and Mrs Langerhans.
Tom Carr of the Morris Ranch reports .85 inch of rain fell in April. The same month in 1950 saw 3.13 inches.
Ken Knapp of St Marys High School received a cash prize and a vacation trip after his essay How Soil Conservation Has Made my Home Town Better won the state contest Save the Soil and Save Texas. He was honored at the state awards banquet at the Texas Hotel in Fort Worth with clergy and local supporters present.
Garden Club Chamber of Commerce and civic groups with Commissioners Court and Judge Victor Sagebiel toured 160 acres west of Gillespie County Airport along Liveoak Creek to consider developing surplus land into a public park. The May Commissioners Court session will decide on making the land available for park use. Bert Wheeler of the Kerrville Chamber endorsed the project. picnic lunch was provided for the 30 to 40 visitors. Mrs C E Fant Jr and her Memphis visitors stay with Mr and Mrs Richard Weinheimer for six weeks.
James Eckert and David Walter received Eagle Scout Badges at the Gillespie County Boy Scout District spring court of honor. Judge Tom Beauchamp presented the awards as hundreds of advancements were announced, with Tyrus Cox presiding and Hans Hannemann assisting.
Mrs H B Lewis and her children from San Antonio are spending a week visiting her parents Mr and Mrs Joe Molberg and other relatives.
The Chamber of Commerce outlines its annual May and June membership drive. It targets nonmembers and rural residents to fund new projects including agricultural and livestock initiatives. A national firm's mineral resource project is under consideration and manager Wm. M. Petmecky will attend a Dallas training program.
Generous rain swept Gillespie County on Sunday night with totals from 30 points to over four inches. Storm clouds produced bright lightning and thunder with hail in Llano and surrounding Central and West Texas areas. Heaviest rains hit the north, Enchanted Rock region reporting four inches or more, aiding crops in the previously dry belt. Weather cooled area highs with Neffendorf recording 51 degrees Monday morning.
Fredericksburg High School Vocational Agriculture department FFA meat judging team finished second at the Texas A and M College state contest with 886 points. Flint Immel earned top individual honors while teammates Reinhardt Reed and J W Goodwin contributed to the high score.
Bill Hodges, partner in Kendal Hodges department store, was elected president of the Fredericksburg Junior Chamber of Commerce at a meeting held at the Evening Farm. He succeeds Dr. Dor Brown and will be installed at June ladies night with officers Victor Sagebiel Norman Rech Werner Moehr Elmer Bierschwabe Rolan Schmidt Fred Dietel Jack Groff Vernon Gold Jack Lawrence named State Director. The program featured an address by Rev. C A Greenwaldt.
Rev G C Senff of Trinity Lutheran Stonewall nearly joined Guinea mission work after Wartburg Seminary proposed sending him there upon graduation. The plan changed following his father’s sudden spring 1925 death, as he stayed to help his mother and sisters. Born October 9 1897 on a Paige area farm, he had seven sisters and one brother, with two siblings deceased. His father emigrated from Lansberg an der Warte Germany at age twelve. He attended Grossville school and Texas Lutheran College in Seguin before starting religious instruction for confirmation.
