Oscar J Fox a San Antonio folk song composer will perform in the High School Auditorium Friday April 9 at 8 pm under the Fredericksburg Music Study Club. Soloists Marjorie McClung and Earnhardt Tiede join him with sixty cent admission. Fox, a Texas composer born 1879 in Burnet County, reflects frontier life in his music.
Work is well underway on a new 30 by 100 foot building on the northeast corner of Fredericksburg Public School campus. The structure will house vocational training athletic fieldhouse and bus storage to accommodate enlarged enrollment. Hugo Klaerner, maintenance foreman, leads the project with basement completed and ground floor framing in progress.
The Gillespie County Fair Association released a 1947 financial statement prepared by Balser Davis and Davidson showing a gross income of 24 429 66 and expenditures of 21 760 70 with a cash balance of 1 554 98. Profits funded permanent grounds improvements including a new white board fence around the track and 40 new stalls at a cost of 3 352 16 and show barn painting and sewer connections. Concession sales produced the largest revenue at 14 583 31, merchandise costs were 8 904 19, leaving a gross profit of 5 679 12.
Fredericksburg businesses will close all day Friday March 26 in observance of Good Friday. The closed facilities include general merchandise stores banks courthouse and city offices. The AAA offices and Post Office stay open. Churches hold services statewide with Lutheran Holy Communion and Methodist evening programs.
Clarence Ratliff was reelected commander of the Frantzen Ahrens Post VFW for the coming year. New officers include William D. Connelly as Senior Vice Commander Edward Hagel as Junior Vice Commander Alberto Nagel as Quartermaster James Eckert as Post Advocate Norman Rech as Chaplain Leroy Oehler as three year trustee and Elmer Ottmers as two year trustee. Installations planned for April 15 with overseas veterans invited. Refreshments followed the meeting.
Harper Independent School District voters will decide on increasing bonded indebtedness from 25 000 to 70 000 on April 3 along with trustees elections. The 45 000 bond funds would finish a long planned school plant, payable over 25 years based on district valuation of 1 055 335 for 1947 48. Tax rate remains 50 cents bonds and 50 cents maintenance per 100 valuation. Details posted at Harper Post Office First State Bank and El Rancho Theatre.
The long running Easter Fire tradition in Fredericksburg returns tonight with a 7 30 program at Fair Park. Boy Scouts helped by laying the fires across Cross Mountain area and surrounding hills as the Easter Bunny gathers eggs and dyes flowers for the event.
A severe hail storm Sunday night caused extensive damage in the southern part of the county. It cut a wide path through Fredericksburg and nearby ranches with hail up to apple size in places and marble size elsewhere, killing livestock and damaging roofs and trees.
Felix Herber, a stock farmer from the Willow City Rheingold community, announces his candidacy for County Commissioner in Precinct 4. He says he is familiar with local problems and would discharge duties to the best of his ability. The present incumbent is Alfre McDougall.
Mrs. Rose Schuler Barnett 52 of San Angelo suffered critical head and body injuries in a two thirty p m crash on the Mason Highway fourteen miles from town. Her car left the road, crossed the opposite side, tore down a fence and tree before overturning in a pasture. she was thrown from the wreck and hospitalized in Fredericksburg in extremely critical condition.
The Fredericksburg school board reelected all teachers applying for re election at the March meeting. Five 1946 faculty members were not candidates, and one did not file. A K Krause will head New Year staff. S E Reed and Karl Hartmann were reelected as principals. Roy Langerhans named Junior High Coach, part of expanded athletic program. he played on the 1941 regional champions and at Schreiner, Sul Ross, and Southwestern State Teachers.
Fredericksburg's Easter Fires, a century old legend, will include a new feature this year as a Saturday night program at the Fair Grounds. The event, organized by the fair association the Chamber of Commerce and Junior Chamber of Commerce, aims to spawn a future pageant around the fires.
Alfred Petsch a Fred ericksburg attorney was elected president of the Gillespie County planning committee at its formation meeting in the courthouse. Also chosen were C J Dooley vice president and Felix Stehling secretary treasurer for a six month term.
Fred ericksburg Independent School District trustees govern a budget totaling about $110000 as August Stahl notes, with income mainly from taxes and state apportionment. The district expects $28,000 in tax revenue this year, up $18,000 from last year due to higher rates and property values. Federal and state contributions supplement the funding while the building program advances.
