The Texas Legislature contemplates creating new boards to govern professions such as law real estate and plumbing while warning against boards setting minimum service prices. It denounces loan sharks charging high rates and urges penitentiary penalties. The column notes unused city hall basement space suitable for offices, with plans to continue on page 6.
Jacob Schmidt 90, pioneer farmer of Gillespie County, passed away Wednesday at his Fredericksburg home where he had lived since arriving in Texas in May 1868. Funeral services were held Thursday at 3 PM with interment in City Cemetery.
Eight indictments were returned by the Gillespie District Court Grand Jury this term. Two indictments lacked arrests. defendants unnamed. Cases include charges against A A Phillips for suspected Security Act violation and Jos Canales for burglary. Edgar Seelig for wife and child desertion. Court recessed for the week, with trials to resume next Monday and potential jury trials slated in the term’s final week.
Mrs. Filter's Ready-to-Wear and Millinery Shop relocates from the Ever's Building on Upper Main Street to a new space next door to Stuckes Bakery on East Main Street. The move takes place Wednesday.
The Safety Division of the Texas State Police will run a two day Safety Lane in Fredericksburg late this week, led by Captain G. E. Schauer. The mobile unit includes light range, wheel alignment, and brake checks, totaling five devices for quick, comprehensive inspections.
Five of six Gillespie County 4H Club boys exhibited calves at the Southwest Texas Boys Fat Stock Show bringing ribbons and prize money. Wesley Crenwelge won first prize of 14.00 in the heavy dry lot class with his calf, champion of the dry lot and reserve show champ. The calf sold to Union Commission Co. for 18 cents per pound. Other winners include Otto Henke 4th bought by Walter Graves for 1134 cents per pound, Frederick Fuhrmann 6th sold to R. Shannon for 12 cents per pound, Walter Fuhrmann 8th bought by J. W Rothmann & Sons for 12 cents per pound, Harold Henke 9th calf sold to J. W Rothmann & Sons for 12 cents per pound. Roland Bonn fed the Grand Champion Calf. (Continued on page 8).
Mrs. Dwight Horton, Texas art patron and promotor of an art colony near Blanco, will speak on Art Appreciation at the Parent-Teacher Association Silver Tea in the Public School Auditorium on Friday. She will display a Texas and international artwork collection including a Frank Reaugh painting and may bring a larger exhibit in fall. Local artists’ works and Primary grades art will be shown.
Ex students and UT alumni from Gillespie County gather at Hotel Nimitz at 7 30 tonight for the annual reunion. Richard Hardin chairs a program featuring Raymond Everett associate professor of architecture who will address the group. Everett has taught at UT Harvard Michgan State Penn State and engaged with multiple art and architecture groups.
The Texas House Highways and Motor Traffic Committee rejected a bill by Rep. Leonard of McAllen to raise the truck load limit from 7,000 pounds by an 11 to 10 vote, breaking a prior deadlock. Proponents may seek a majority vote on a minority report next week.
Vehicles may display the new plates with an effective start in March and a deadline of April 1. February sales were slow with about 200 plates sold. more than 3,000 remain to be sold, urging early purchase to avoid a rush.
A farm house on the Eugene Zenner farm in Live Oak was destroyed by fire Monday night. Sparks from a faulty flue are suspected as the origin. The John White family, occupying the building, lost practically all their household goods.
A brooder house and its contents at the Knopp and Metzger Poultry Farm burned Thursday night last week. The fire destroyed 205 five week old pullets with damage estimated around $175. The origin is unknown but suspected to be the brooder stove.
Directors of the Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers Association are expected to attend a two day meeting in Fredericksburg next week. Edyth Krauskopf announced reservations for a banquet at the Mitiz Hotel where upwards of 159 guests will gather Wednesday night. H A Ries will give the welcome, C B Wardlaw will respond, G W Cunningham will act as toastmaster, and Cuberson Deal will deliver the evening address. Continued on page 2 column 4.
Mrs. Louise Langerhans Leazar and Mrs. Julia Langerhans Lott sustained cuts and bruises when their car left the Austin San Antonio highway near Fredericksburg. The vehicle struck a culvert and fence post but did not overturn before emergency treatment and return home.
A new produce house specializing in poultry eggs and hides opened this week by Gus A Witting in the former R M Lewis building opposite Schanduu and Reichenau. Witting has long operated a produce house in San Antonio and Eddie Heimann oversees the local operation.
Sheriff Klaerner reports multiple chicken thefts near Mason with several hundred chickens taken. Poultry men are urged to watch for the thieves and report any sightings to the sheriff's office. Also notes births: a son born Feb 22 to Mr and Mrs Albert Lee Meijer and a son born Feb 24 to Mr and Mrs Werner A Klier.
