Two Gillespie Girls Compete For Miss South Texas Title

Two Fredericksburg teens vie for Miss South Texas as part of a 33-contestant pageant June 30 to July 2 in Seguin. Beverly Harris 16 and Connie Stewart 18 carry local ties and scholarships totaling 11 000, with events at Seguin Guadalupe County Coliseum and related receptions.

July Fourth Racing Festival Held at Gillespie County Fair Grounds

The Gillespie County Fair and Festivals Association runs a three day July Fourth Racing Festival beginning Saturday July 2 at 2 p.m. with 28 races featuring top thoroughbreds and quarter horses. The weekend blends hoofbeats by day and dance music by night at the Gillespie County Fair Grounds.

New Officers For Gillespie County Historical Society Elected

The Gillespie County Historical Society named 1977 78 officers at a June 20 meeting at the Vereins Kirche. Glen Treiles is president with Roberta Smith as vice president Jimmie Langerhans secretary and Jay Cox treasurer. Margaret Bracher continues as Gillespie County Historical Commission chair through Dec 31 1978.

Fredericksburg Standard Wins State Press Contest Award

The Fredericksburg Standard earned a third place in appearance among Division Four weekly papers 2,500 to 4,000 in circulation at the Texas Press Association convention in Galveston. Editor Art Kowert accepted the honor with Mrs. Kowert. Lampasas Record and Perryton Herald ranked above. Kowert, a past TPA president, led memorial services for fallen members during the event.

McMahon to be sworn as Gillespie County precinct 2 commissioner

James T. McMahon will take office Friday July 1 at 9 a.m. in the county commissioners courtroom to replace retiring J. Marvin Williams. The ceremony will be attended by the full commission including Commissioners Herber Rusenberger Hahn and Williams with County Judge Sagebiel and County Clerk Lange administering the oath. Williams cited pressing personal obligations and family illnesses for retirement and will continue serving until July 1.

Fredericksburg Lions elects Deike as new president

Oliver Deike succeeds James Culver as president of the Fredericksburg Lions Club during a Wednesday ladies night at Community Hall. Don Backer of Boerne installs Deike and new officers including Felix Land first vice president Lester Frantzen second vice president and Charlie Odgers third vice president. New directors are James Riggs and Dr Richard Timmer with Maurice Schuman and Henry Laughlin as holdovers. Backer cites Lions strength with 6 743 clubs in 149 countries and 1 200 000 members.
