Price Freeze Threatens Texas Poultry Industry Crisis
Fredericksburg business leaders warn the national price freeze could trigger a turkey and chicken shortage. Sk H Becker of Market Produce cites losses from low barn prices and high feed costs, as breeders and hatcheries halt production to avoid losses. Gus Cage of Cage Turkey Hatchery supports the view, noting widespread cutbacks and drowning of day-old chicks in Gonzales County as farmers struggle to break even. The freeze locks payments below costs, threatening supply until federal action reverses course.
