Record Peach Harvest Expected to Reach 225000 Bushels

Officials project a near record peach crop with a target of 225000 bushels as late August harvest nears. Ideal rains last summer aided bud development and 1600 cold hours rested all varieties. Fewer diseases and cold winters reduced insects and brown rot this spring. If crop surpasses 225000, it would nearly double the tully record.

Peach JAMboree Opens in Stonewall with 1977 Harvest Highlight

The 16th Annual Peach JAMboree begins Friday at 8 p.m. in the Rodeo Arena Stonewall showcasing the 1977 peach crop with a show and auction and peaches served in many forms. Saturday features a parade with Austin humorist Cactus Pryor as marshal, barbecue meals, armadillo racing, games, a peach show and auction, and the final rodeo with the Stonewall Peach Queen Pageant. Vic's Rodeo Company of Marion produces the events.

Fourteen Seek Peach Queen Title at Stonewall Jamboree

Fourteen contestants, the most ever, vie for the Stonewall Peach Queen crown during Saturday night program at the 16th Annual Peach Jamboree in Gillespie County. Cactus Pryor will host the crowning and serve as parade grand marshal for the 2 pm procession.

24th Texas Tour Antique Cars Rolls Into Fredericksburg

Fredericksburg hosts the 24th Annual Texas Tour of the Horseless Carriage Club of America with 200 plus antique cars and 450 to 500 participants touring Main Street and local highways. Events include a parade, driving contests, and 19 restoration categories. Registration at First Federal Savings from 1 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Charles C. Shierlow and Dr. Lloyd Doggett serve as tour leaders. Opening party, slide show, and dance wrap the evening.

Fredericksburg District to auction Morris Ranch School and 8488 acres

The Fredericksburg Independent School District plans to sell the historic Morris Ranch School building and surrounding 8,488 acres in Gillespie County. Bids will be sought via ads in major newspapers and the Wall Street Journal with a 30 day waiting period before bid opening planned for late July or early August.

Althaus Named Texas Reserve Champion at Auctioneers Meet

Gillespie County auctioneer Dudley Althaus placed second to Bob Goree of Amarillo at the Texas Auctioneers Association Convention in Abilene. He sold two Gillespie County items, a peach box for 47.50 and a custom boar gavel for 65, judged on bid calling and presentation.

Heritage Group Annual Meeting Set For Monday

The Fredericksburg Heritage Federation will meet Monday at 7 30 p m at Birch's Barbecue to discuss restoring the Old Gillespie County Jail. Newcomers are invited and refreshments provided. The mayor and county officials have been invited.

Zion Installs New Pastor This Sunday

Rev. Ardene A. Wuthrich will be installed as pastor of Zion Lutheran Church on his 40th birthday, Sunday June 19 at 10:30 a.m. The ceremony will be conducted by Rev. Kent Bohls with a 2 to 4 p.m. reception in the church annex for Rev. and Mrs. Wuthrich. He was born June 19 1937 in Taylor and is a Taylor High School graduate.

The Gillespie County Historical Society awarded honors for historic preservation and elected new directors at its annual meeting in Lady Bird Johnson Park. Jack Maguire of the Institute of Texan Cultures gave a witty talk on lesser known history and discussed the institute's 50 000 square feet of exhibits and Texas cultural groups.

Margaret Bracher presided at a Gillespie County Historical Society meeting featuring an invocation by Glen Treibs and local musical entertainment. Seniors of the Messengers of Joy sang under Virginia Mohr, and Dick Dover sang with his wife Valerie performing At the End of the Trail. Dover also sang God Bless America with audience participation.
