Peach Crop Outlook in Gillespie County Seems Bleak

The Gillespie County peach crop faces its gloomiest year in years with many orchards pulling trees and replanting in grasses. Ernst Hodges, a leading grower east of Stonewall, says exceeding 200 bushels would be a milestone. others report blossoms faded, fruit dropped, and leaves returning without fruit. Weather, including a brutal cold snap in 1951 and an early 1952 frost, is blamed for widespread damage to commercial and home orchards.
