Planning Board Studies Road Law and School Consolidation

The rural committee of the Gillespie County Planning Board met to study the optional county road law and the consolidation of county schools. Two sub committees were formed to gather road funding details from 1945 to 1947 and to study school consolidation with a planned Austin trip. A report is due at the June 14 meeting.

Red Cross Fails to Attract Quorum

The Gillespie County Chapter of the American Red Cross did not meet due to a missing quorum of fifteen members. No officers were elected for the next fiscal year. President Wm Bruns named a nominating committee to pick twelve directors from a slate of twenty four. Mrs Fred Mathisen and Mrs Henry Lochte join the committee. a third member will be chosen. An additional meeting before July 1 will elect directors and officers.

Jimmie Schandua reburied with full military honors

Private First Class Jimmie Edgar Schandua died in a Japanese prisoner of war camp in Moulmein Burma on September 14 1943. He was buried with full military honors by the Louis Jordan Post American Legion at Beckmann Funeral Home and Greenwood Cemetery. Surviving are his parents two brothers and three sisters.

Thousands gather for Fredericksburg Gillespie County homecoming centennial weekend starting Sunday at 3 p m with a Fair Park program of memory songs dances and a pioneer dance later featuring local musicians and ex residents from San Antonio and Bexar County in a multistage celebration across churches and public venues.

City approves new fire truck for Fredericksburg department

The City Commission authorized purchasing a new triple combination fire truck from Burke & Sims Fire Equipment Co. for about 7700 dollars. The 1924 pumper will be disposed of after arrival and the unit will serve rural and city calls with a 500 gpm pump and 300 gallon water tank, upgrading the department to a comparable size city.

Zwiener Announces Candidacy for State Legislature

Lonny F. Zwiener of Fredericksburg, UT Austin student and Marine veteran, announced this week as a candidate for Representative of the 85th District. He cited district voters across Gillespie, Blanco, Kendall and Llano Counties and emphasized honesty, education, legal training, and open minded service.

City water department urges conservation with a two day odd even sprinkling schedule.
