The school held its largest class in history at the athletic stadium on Thursday night. Graduates sat on ground level facing the speaker with faculty and guests to the right and part of the Frederickburg High School Band visible on the left.
Local churches announce summer Vacation Church Schools with dates ranging from May 31 to June 18. St James Lutheran Harper runs May 31 to June 11 with a closing program. Edison Street Methodist operates June 7 to 18 with four classes and nursery. Zion Lutheran plans June 7 to 18.
At FHS field a packed crowd watched 112 graduates receive honors. Valedictorian Jean Feller earned a year of free tuition, plus several awards. salutatorian Shirley Grona and third-ranked James Weinheimer also received scholarships. Fehrenbach Jr. won the Freedoms Foundation Distinguished Individual Award and teacher’s medal. Several students earned certificates for perfect attendance.
Dr John W Mc Farland Houston Public Schools superintendent told FHS graduates that the future of America rests on thinking citizens. He described thinking as the central purpose of the school and a vital future job for graduates during Thursday night's program climax.
Lynette Kay Crenwelge age sixteen is the first entrant in the Peach Queen Pageant at the Stonewall JAMboree June 18 19. She will parade Saturday June 19 and compete before judges from Austin and San Antonio with the pageant at 8 30 p m in the Stonewall Rodeo Arena.
One hundred twenty Girl Scouts and Brownies began a day camp at Oakcrest Park despite morning rain. Scouts sheltered indoors then returned as the sun came out to finish the week with activities including merit badges, cooking, camping, and a Thursday camp fire near the pavilion. Parents and many adults assist with the program.
Fredericksburg faces below par sewage treatment facilities after a recent survey of the plant east of the city. R B Riddle acting chief writes to Mayor Sidney Henke and Walter Fuhrmann detailing findings and consequences for water pollution control.
Fredericksburg and Gillespie County reported near record May rainfall with 7.01 inches for the month, surpassing 1957 and nearing records. The Friday storm dropped up to 7 inches at Clint Hardin Ranch near Cedar Mountain, with 5.30 inches near Rudy Nunmanns and hail from hen eggs to golf balls, causing limited damage.
Fredericksburg FFA member George Walker was elected to a state FFA office at the Area VII meeting in San Antonio. He becomes the first Future Farmer from Fredericksburg High School to hold state office, representing Area VII on the state board. Walker will compete with nine others for state president at the Houston convention in July. Other honors include Kenneth Lindig scholarship, Ira Lee Greenhand Star Farmer Award, Jimmy Duecker Star Chapter Farmer Award, and six members approved for the State Farmer Degree.
A full day and night of outstanding quarter horse performance is planned for Saturday June 12 at Fair Park. The Gillespie County Fair Association hosts the seventh shows with daytime performance classes in the morning and halter classes in the afternoon, and Central Texas Cutting Horse Association staging a night show with jackpot cutting. Entries close and horses must be at the grounds by 6:00 p m. Jim Daniels of Chapel Hill will judge the event which is approved by the American Quarter Horse Association and another body.
