Denton Man Injured In Enchanted Rock Fall

A Denton State School employee, Guy Owen, 37, was rescued after a fall at Enchanted Rock 18 miles north of Fredericksburg. He sustained a fractured lower back with multiple abrasions and lacerations and was transported to San Antonio’s Community Hospital in stable condition. Eye witnesses described a 70 to 90 foot descent and rescue actions by rock climbers and Fredericksburg emergency personnel.

Memorial Day Race Meet draws 3500 at Gillespie County Fair Grounds

Fredericksburgers hosted a three day Memorial Day Race Meet at Gillespie County Fair Grounds with 3500 attendees. Solid Lace won the Memorial Day Derby on Monday under Manuel Enriquez for owner trainer W D Stockton of Menard in the $1050 purse one mile race.

First Summer Festival Opens With Fast Races and Big Purses

The meet offers 11 3500 dollars in purse money led by a 2000 match race won by Anchor Bar Bay a four year old mare over Dynamite a five year old gelding. Our Pass a two year old stallion placed second to Mr Fancy Charge in a 330 yard race. Kitty Wells headlined the outdoor pavilion with Johnny and Bobby Wright as guests. Continued on page 13.

Texas Walk Fest expects 800 to 1000 participants

Cliff Hahne, president of International Peoples' Sports USA, says the Second Annual Texas Walk Fest in Fredericksburg June 11-12 may draw 800 to 1,000 people. Over 500 have pre-registered, including 27 from outside the U S with participants from West Germany and Switzerland. Fredericksburg leads Texas towns with 85 registrants.

Hunter and Jumper Horse Show Set at Gillespie County Fair Grounds

More than 200 horses and riders are expected June 10 to 12 for the 16th annual Hunter and Jumper Horse Show at Gillespie County Fair Grounds. The event could exceed 250 entries daily from 8 a.m. to dusk, a local record, said show secretary Linda Kirk Jr. of Houston. The 1977 A and B rated show is recognized by the American Horse Shows Association and the Texas Hunter and Jumper Association as it returns to the new grounds after last year’s rescheduling. Banquet to honor Gillespie County historians June 9

The Gillespie County Historical Society and Commission will host its annual awards and membership banquet on Thursday June 9 at Pioneer Pavilion Lady Bird Johnson Park. Jack Maguire executive director of the Institute of Texan Cultures will speak on Texas history full of lesser known stories.

Fredericksburg High's 1977 graduates 168 strong at outdoor gym

A near record class of 168 Fredericksburg seniors graduated Friday at FHS Stadium before about 2200 parents and friends. Valedictorian Nina Nixon urged pioneers to unlock talents as they pursue invention and discovery while salutatorian Tami Strackbein celebrated the class's district state and national honors. Twenty nine scholarships or awards totaling multiple cash gifts were given to 22 seniors by Superintendent Crandall Young and Principal Rex Glover, with funds from the Klingelhoefer Needy Student Assistance Fund and several named memorial funds awarding numbers from 410 to 200 dollars.

New Pastor Named for St Francis Xavier Parish

The Rev. Victor G. Schmidtzinsky begins duties as pastor at St Francis Xavier Catholic Church succeeding the Rev. W W Schneider who returned to Germany after 23 years. Masses this weekend include 7 30 pm Friday 7 pm Saturday and 9 and 11 am Sunday with a reception after the 7 pm Saturday mass. He hails from Gillespie County and comes from D Hanis where he led Holy Cross Church.

Rites Tuesday For Two Killed In Auto Mishap

Funeral services were held Tuesday for C T Saunders 41 and his wife Mary Ellen Kuhlmann 35 who died in an auto accident returning from Fredericksburg. The couple’s daughters Kim 16 and Karrie 12 remained hospitalized in Bexar County Hospital. The Saunders family lived in San Antonio where he worked for the state highway department and she for Gunn Oldsmobile.
