Record Crowds Attend Final Day of Festival Race Meet
A July Fourth festival drew record crowds at the four day race meet with Grandstand seats filled and rail standing room scarce. Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson and party attended the finale featuring eight races and a baseball game. Grace's Lady won the Independence Derby in 1 52 4 over Never Been Broke with F Arcenez the jockey. A second Derby, Hill Country Peach Derby, was won by Go Morris Go in 55.4 seconds with Cherry Bart placing second and Red Fingers third. Peach queen Miss Kathy Wath and Cherry Tomlinson presented a peach basket to the owner.

St Marys Tower Clock to be Electrified in Fredericksburg
The St Marys Catholic Church clock in Fredericksburg will be electrified and operated by push button after renovation. Cincinnati engineers will dismantle and ship the clock for electric conversion, expected to be back in the steeple by late August. The 1906 timepiece has operated for 56 years and cost about 4000 dollars, with Rev J J Hildebrand urging parishioner support to restore the Bells of St Marys.

A two day Hunter and Jumper horse show at Gillespie County Fair Grounds on July 21 and 22 features top horses and riders from Fort Sam Houston and military personnel. It is sanctioned by the Texas Hunter and Jumper Association and riders will compete in patterns and jumps up to six feet high. A local horse named Buddy owned by Mr and Mrs Adolph Boening trains at Fort Sam Houston and is expected to appear in multiple events. The event is directed by Mrs Lisa Russell of San Antonio.
