Army Nurse Knopp Receives Russian Decoration in Austria
Lt. Christine Knopp of the U.S. Army Nursing Corps returned home on furlough after six and a half months on the European front nursing wounded soldiers. On May 29, 1945 she received the Russian “Mark of Guard” from Major General D. A. Orechkin in Linz for nursing Russians and exemplifying American Army Nurses.

Harold Tatsch Returns Home After Survival of Okinawa Sinking
Seaman Second Class Harold Tatsch son of the county treasurer, on a 30 day furlough, recounts the destroyer USS Derxler being struck by two suicide planes near Okinawa on May 28. The ship sank in 49 seconds, he and others were saved after 2.5 hours in the sea. he will report to duty in Galveston on August 8.

Bottlers Beat Giants In Fifteen Innings At Seipp Park
The Seven Up Bottlers of San Antonio defeated the Giants 11 to 9 after a four hour, fifteen inning marathon Sunday at Seipp Park. Eighteen errors were recorded, many batters were hit, and the game featured farcical miscues and dramatic hits as Oine Upper pitched 15 innings with 18 strikeouts while Al Enderlin and H Klaerner split relief duties.

Auto Use Stamp Drive Hits Gillespie County
Gillespie County vehicle owners who did not buy the Federal Auto Use stamp face fines from five to twenty five dollars plus the stamp cost. 1950 stamps were sold in the county, less than two thirds of the 3200 registrations. Deputy collector Alvin Davidson said a county check will target vehicles without stamps and noncompliant owners will be summoned.

Former Gillespian Commands Giant New Carrier In Pacific
Executive officer of the newly commissioned giant aircraft carrier USS Kula Gulf is Comdr. Thomas W Wagner USN. He is 38, a Stonewall native and son of Mrs Emilie Burg Wagner formerly of here now in San Antonio. The Kula Gulf honors the water between Kolombangara and New Georgia Islands noted for battles in July 1943. Wagner attended Fredericksburg schools and George Washington University before joining the navy and working in Washington.
