Three people died in area traffic crashes during a festive Independence Day weekend. Staff Sergeant John James Buchfeld, 23, of Webb AFB, and his eight month old son John Buchfeld Jr. died in Gillespie County when a 1957 Plymouth station wagon left the highway and crashed after the driver may have fallen asleep. Mrs Beverly Buchfeld, 20, was critically injured and later treated at Lackland AFB Hospital. Buchfeld’s body and his son were to be interred at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. The county’s 1964 traffic fatalities reached 10, a record with half the year gone. The third fatality was Dewayne Harlan, 18, of Llano, who died when his car hit a tree on Highway 16 south of Llano.
