A Kingdom for a Horse in World War I Requisition
The French government issued a 160000 horse requisition in mid 1918 to support Allied forces, with regions and commissions overseeing purchases. Horses meeting age and health criteria were bought at about 2400 francs, two thirds allocated to the American Army, and most horses ultimately supplied by the US at cost. The program ended in August 1918, leaving few fit for farming duties and elevating the horse to heroic status.
