Rainfall In County During 1947 Hit New Low

In Gillespie County 1947 brought its lowest annual rainfall since 1933 with most areas under 18 inches. Harper reported the year’s wettest spot with 26.68 inches, while Doss logged 21.30 and Fredericksburg 16.77. December totals ranged from 0.96 at Fredericksburg to 1.90 inches at Bankersmith.

Martin Announces Reelection Bid for 85th District

Representative Tom Martin announced Tuesday his candidacy for reelection to the 85th District seat. The primary vote on July 24 will determine the outcome with Blanco Gillespie Kendall and Llano Counties in the district. He also said he would not seek Congress or the U S Senate seat held by W Lee O Daniels.

Gillespie County Tops 1946 Deer Hunting Ranking in Hill Country

A Texas Game, Fish and Oyster Commission report shows Gillespie County leading the Hill Country for deer and turkey hunting in 1946, with 2324 deer and 558 turkeys killed by 3,966 hunters on 349,900 acres. County totals for nearby areas and cooperative deer research in Kerr and Mason counties are also noted in the study.

Gillespie County Fair Stockholders Set Annual Meeting

Gillespie County Fair Association stockholders plan their annual meeting Tuesday January 13 at 7 30 p m in the Commissioners Court room. Six directors will be elected for three years under a no self succession policy. The meeting will review improvements from the past two years including flooring of the exhibition hall a 40 horse stable addition a new race track railing and park sewage connections. President Gilbert Kaderli urges broad stockholder turnout.

Ramon Cruz Jr Wins First Baby of the Year in Fredericksburg

Ramon Cruz Jr the first baby of 1948 was born at Fredericksburg Hospital and Clinic at 5 44 am on Friday January 2 1948 attending physician Dr Lorence Feller. Mayor Joe Molberg awarded 25 prizes donated by local merchants at a Palace Theatre ceremony. Cruz is a cement finisher and the tenth first born to receive prizes in the annual stork derby.

Neal To Serve As Work Unit Conservationist

T. W. Neal will head the Gillespie County Soil Conservation District Work Unit and provide technical help to farmers and ranchers by month end. He will be joined by an engineer and staff to oversee tanks field terraces and diversion terraces though staff housing is limited for now. Neal, a long time soil conservation service employee, seeks a house and welcomes applications through the district office.
