City Shows 1966 Building Permits Lead 1965 Totals

City Clerk Herman Leifents reports 1966 building permits totaled 13 for 621,140 up from 16 for 752,685 in 1965. Residential work dominated with 27 new homes costing 328,370. Major permits included Sunday House Motel 150,000 and Gillespie County Courthouse renovation 190,000.

Seabees Honor Nimitz With Fredericksburg Drill Display

The Seabees precision drill team from Davisville performed a noon show in freezing weather in front of the Nimitz Hotel to honor Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz. The 32 man unit, veterans of the Vietnam era, has appeared at Sun Bowl Cotton Bowl Pecan and Bluebonnet Bowls.

Shepperd Named Trustee for LBJ State Park Funds

Gov. John B. Connally named John Ben Shepperd of Odessa as sole trustee of the fund to buy land for the LBJ State Park in Gillespie County. The former Texas attorney general plans to appoint a statewide advisory committee to guide park development and assist plans while land condemnation proceeds continue on remaining parcels.

Clearing begins on LBJ State Park tract in Gillespie County

The State Parks and Wildlife Commission began fencing a 25 acre tract of the Lyndon B. Johnson State Park near Stonewall. The Hightower Tract will host native wildlife and a perimeter road. underbrush is being cleared while trees are preserved. National Park Service planners assisted, with costs from the park fund. Five die on fog bound highway in Gillespie County toll rises

Airman Woodrow Vail Jr. 19 died after being struck by a car on foggy U S Highway 87 four and nine tenths miles south of Fredericksburg. The crash involved five vehicles and marked the county s fifth highway death in six days. Vail had just been released on New Year’s leave and was returning to his relatives when the fatal impact occurred.

City Park Board Reviews Golf Course Plans

Fredericksburg city park board on Thursday reviewed preliminary golf course plans for park development. The designs were prepared by Frank Drought, with George A. Hoffman of San Antonio as the golf course architect. Mayor Pro Tem Werner Meyer and City Commissioner Ewald Geistweidt joined Walter Fuhrmann and the board in the review.
