The Fredericksburg Public Schools join with other state districts during the week of March 26 to observe the 20th Annual Public Schools Week. The Standard highlights Pub- as a focal point of the issue.
Local church women from eight churches invite the community to World Day of Prayer on Friday March 6 at 10 am in St Marys Catholic Church. The event unites worship across six continents with prayers in 75 languages and a thousand dialects.
Report shows rainfall this week 1.56 inches and February total 2.02 inches. Yearly rainfall stands at 2.60 inches with 2.75 inches recorded on the same date last year. Temperature data lists a low of 39 and a high of 87 for February.

All parents and teachers urged to return slips by February 27 and the public invited.
Gillespie County Airport completed installation of a low frequency radio beacon to aid landing and locating. The FAA provided the equipment and Central Texas Electric Cooperative donated materials. The beacon operates on 305 Kilocycles since Feb 16 and will link to the sheriff if needed. Runway lighting and an 800 foot extension aim to expand use for business aircraft in all weather. A four-plane hangar was built last year with no vacancies amid rising demand.
Mayor Sidney Henke and Commissioners Walter Otters and Pat Pyka filed to seek re election. Filing deadline is Wednesday March 11. Absentee voting runs from March 12 to March 31.
The late Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz was memorialized in Fredericksburg on the 85th anniversary of his birth and the fourth anniversary of his burial. Local veterans groups placed a wreath at the Nimitz Memorial Naval Museum and on his family graves, with church bells tolling and a 10 am radio tribute by the Gillespie County Ministerial Alliance.
Gillesco Inc has taken over operation of Afsco at Gillespie County Airport to continue precision parts manufacturing mainly for the airplane industry. The new firm, with R L Frantzen as president and Clayton Behrends as GM, employs seven workers and serves Mooney Aircraft Navion and Aero Commander. It also markets a liquid cattle feed dispenser and specializes in Helicarc welding. expansion plans are under study.
The Emergency Operations Simulation conducted Feb 5 drew praise from the Office of Civil Defense Department of the Army and Texas Department of Public Safety. Bill Parker Region Five Director called it one of the best exercises in the state and credited public officials for their time and active participation in training and the exercise. Continued remarks note Civil Defense as regular government in emergency.
