The Austin area council will hold its annual meeting on Monday February 3 at 7 30 p m at the Boy Scout Headquarters in Austin. Fredericksburg and ten counties will be represented as the council lists 47 troops and 900 scouts under its jurisdiction. A turkey dinner will be served by the Mothers Club and any scout leader or adult interested in boys work may attend.
Spontaneous combustion sparked a blaze at the Heilmann Paint and Trimming Shop on lower Main Street Fredericksburg Tuesday night. Alanza Evers alerted the fire department. firefighters confined flames to stock with minimal building damage. Loss estimated at 509 to 600 dollars.
Willie Eckert reports that Center Point Road, currently 20 feet, will be widened to 40 feet with land donations from local residents. The upgrade aims to enable county tractor and grader work and seeks support from the Commissioners Court to provide a first class road for the Bear Creek Community.
A newborn son was welcomed into the family of Mr. and Mrs. Erwin Kraus. The birth announcement notes the new arrival and expresses congratulations.
The past week saw multiple pioneer deaths in Gillespie County led by Peter Jacoby of Fredericksburg. Jacoby, born October 18 1835 in Oberkosten Germany, survived early hardships and Civil War service before his death at the Hitzfeld home. Also obituary notes for Fredericksburg resident Clara Feller born December 12 1832 in Heiligenroth Prussia, who with husband William Feller lived on Dry Creek before Civil War era tragedy.
The Standard changes to eight point type with one point spacing to add reading matter. The Linotype engineers developed Merit turned to Tonic No 5 to improve readability by shortening descenders and heightening capitals. Eye specialists nationwide endorse the type for reducing eye strain.
The Louis Jordan Post of the American Legion plans a Lincoln's birthday banquet at Hotel Nimitz for ex service men and their guests. Civil War and Spanish American War veterans and wives are honored guests with state leaders Cox and Hawkins possibly attending. A post social dance will follow and the public may attend.
The Collegiate Play Aunt Lucia was staged at the High School Auditorium Friday and Peter's Hall Saturday to packed houses. Miss Dia Heringa organized the program with tireless effort, earning wide credit for its smooth success. A big pageant opening by many children, then the College Glee Club under Ad Hopf delivered fine, unified singing after which the play itself was well performed by all cast members.
Last Friday near moonlight Oscar Schmidt’s car halted a near collision on lower Main Street when two small girls dashed in front. Observers noted the benefits of good brakes and cautioned parents that Main Street is no longer a safe crossing for unsupervised children.
Mr. Ad. Stahl, local Gulf Refining Co. agent, returned from San Antonio last Saturday where he attended a district meeting of the Gulf Refining Co.
The Texas Legislature reviews three main plans to reorganize the State Penitentiary moving from a farming system to an industrial plant near the capital, concentrating farming at the Imperial Farm near Houston, or rehabilitating Huntsville walls. Critics cite disorganization and dispersed property across 77 000 acres in several counties as the root of failure and question the value of prison farming versus manufacturing. Demand grows for manufacturing emphasis with farming as a secondary role to cut losses and support state institutions, a stance championed by the Majority Report and Governor Dan Moody.
