Child Born Under Highway Bridge West Of Harper Dies

A couple hitchhiking west of Fredericksburg on U S Highway 290 near Kimble County welcomed a stillborn child at daybreak under a bridge on Christmas Day. Mrs. I C Myers, 23, suffered burns and exposure, later developing pneumonia. The parents, en route from Phoenix to Aransas Pass, sought shelter after a cold night.

Deer And Turkey Hunting Season Closes Friday

Gillespie County ends its annual deer and turkey hunting season on Friday December 31 after a season marked by heavy buck harvests in most areas and low kills in others. Trapping runs through January and quail remains open until January 16.

Higher Postal Rates Take Effect January First

New rates go into effect January 1 across all mail classes except 3 cent letter postage and 1 cent post card. Parcel post rises 2 to 10 cents per pound by weight with lighter parcels up, special delivery up to 15 cents, money orders to 10–35 cents, insurance 5–30 cents, domestic airmail to 6 cents, and new 1 cent Airpost card available for brief messages. Gift parcel rates update for West Germany zones and Berlin with several per pound charges. no service for Soviet zone gift parcels.

Three Auto Mishaps Mar Yule Holidays In Gillespie County

The Gillespie County holiday period saw three highway accidents and a fire with no serious injuries. Early Christmas Eve the Mason Highway incident at the foot of Loch Berg left Lt. Sam Reiser and family overturning their car en route to Hobbs New Mexico. details continued on page 7.

First New Year Baby Contest At Palace Theatre

The first baby of the New Year will win a prize package from Mutual Lumber Company, Red and White, Harry Priess Grocery, Palace Theatre, and Super Service Station. If no birth by Sunday, awards move to the next Sunday. Parents must be residents of Gillespie County and a birth certificate must be shown at the Palace Theatre.

Peach Growers Seek To Open Marketing Co-Op Here

Gillespie County peach growers plan a Hill Country marketing cooperative to start for the 1949 season. Two grading sheds would be built in Stonewall and Fredericksburg, with $30 000 capital stock at $100 per share. Stonewall members have already contributed $15 400. Fredericksburg interest is growing.

Luckenbach Rites Set for Thursday Afternoon

Final rites are scheduled for Edward Luckenbach at 2:00 p.m. Thursday at Schaetter Funeral Home. Interment will follow in City Cemetery. He died Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at age 61 years 8 months 3 days. Full obituary to appear next week in the Standard.

Gillespie County FFA and 4 H members prepare a record 635 animals for the January 21 and 22 fat stock show. The catalog lists 58 steers 21 breeding beef cattle 46 Angora goats 190 fat lambs 80 breeding sheep 25 fat pigs 15 breeding hogs 10 jersey heifers 90 capons 83 breeding chickens and 17 turkeys. First Methodist Building Partially Finished

The First Methodist Church plans a partial opening with 10 55 am worship and a 7 30 pm service while interior work and new pews await completion. Rev. Schulze leads with sermons on The Church of Power and Encouragers as work continues toward full completion by next fall.
