Wintering cattle and dairy herds in hard times

Editor Tait Butler advises livestock keepers to reduce herds in fall when feeds are scarce and expensive. Cull unprofitable cows and inferior stock, retain breeding stock and top producers, and rely on homegrown roughage like hay and legumes. Beef cattle may yield profit in a short 100 to 120 day period if cattle are good or purchasable at right prices.
