A Fredericksburg postal inspection shows city wide sidewalk improvements needed to meet government standards for a free mail delivery system. About 60 to 70 percent of sidewalks are unsuitable, requiring gravel sand cinders or cement surfaces and a proper walk-off to the street. Final action awaits completion of the new post office building and space expansion for the service.
The governor elect named his advisory committee with no current or former public office holders and no prominent activists. Supporters praise the law abiding, honest citizens while critics foresee clashes with labor and socialist factions. A Fredericksburg post office site debate follows as bids arrive for a government property deal.
The quail season begins today and runs to January 16 with shooting hours from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset. The game department notes increased landowner protection and a stock reloading program releasing 14 075 Bob White quail in suitable ranges.

Legionnaires select San Angelo as the site for their upcoming convention. A Smokehouse on the Mrs Charles Hartmann Farm near Live Oak burned Monday afternoon destroying hundreds of pounds of sausage ham and bacon. Neighbors aided the Hartmann family preventing spread to other buildings.
More than one hundred men who returned to Texas after twenty years laid down arms reassembled for the Twenty-First District Convention in Fredericksburg. A dinner, program, and business session at Peter's Hall named San Angelo as the spring site, following a Saturday start with hotel registration and a parade by the Coleman High School Band.
Secretary Wallace has called a Cotton Marketing Quota Referendum for December 10 1938 to decide continuing compulsory cotton sale restrictions in 1939 Farmers who produced cotton in 1938 may vote at the Agricultural Building Fredericksburg Gillespie County from 9 am to 5 pm Each eligible voter may cast one vote H F Grote County Agent.
In 1908 tuberculosis claimed a life every 35 minutes in the United States. Christmas Seals fund efforts by tuberculosis associations to assist the medical profession in wiping out the disease nationwide.
Fredericksburg invites bids to build a city light distribution system with underground street lighting on Main Street and circuits for traffic bridges and residential intersections. Plans drawn by Joe E Ward of Wichita Falls include underground and pole lines and a December 19 bid opening with PWA approval.
Governor James V. Allred at Austin urges support for the national state and local Christmas Seal Sale to fund tuberculosis work. He notes the annual drive finances medical and charitable groups fighting TB and highlights ongoing need as victory fruits are reported.
Two Germans Johanna Hoff mann and Otto Herman Voss were convicted in New York of conspiring to steal military secrets. A third, Erich Glaser, awaits verdict. A $1,000,000 per year program to foster ties with Latin America was announced, non military in scope. Five killed in Seattle to San Francisco airliner crash due to water impact. Postmaster R W Klingel Hoefer urges patrons to mail gifts cards and letters early to avoid Yuletide delays. Tips include no seals on address side, avoid small envelopes, insure valuables, use not open before Christmas stickers, and use strong containers with proper inspection labels. Continued on page 3.
Wednesday night intruders broke into the Golden Arrow drive in at West Main and South Acorn, taking cigarettes cigars beer and nickels from the phono graph. Loss is about 300 dollars. Entry was gained by forcing a screen and window lock on the South Acorn side. Mr Cuccia, owner, found doors open and premises in disorder this morning. Police have clues but no arrests as of Thursday noon.
Harvey Klaerner announced he will take over the Buckhorn Bar on West Main Street this Thursday November 1. He will manage the cafe and continue serving all current foods and drinks while also continuing electrical work in the city.
Henry Dietrich a 29 year old Brownwood man died after a misidentified shot by Ward Parks 50 while turkey hunting on Sem Rode ranch near Doss Texas The 2 men were separated when Parks fired striking Dietrich in the abdomen Dietrich died at 6 pm after being rushed to a local hospital Parks facing charges filed by County Attorney Arthur Stehling The incident occurred at 2 pm and other Brownwood party members included Charles Dietrich M J Johnson Jodie Peaks and Steve Peaks Continued on page 3 Col 1
The Fredericksburg Concert Band directed by Mr. G. A. Hartmann will perform a thirty minute concert at the Palace Theatre on Wednesday December 7. Proceeds from the evening go to the band. A well rounded program is planned and the film Citadel will be shown with the program.
The annual Christmas Turkey Market will open on Monday December 5 according to local produce men planning to buy birds for Christmas consumption in eastern markets. During Thanksgiving market five carloads of turkeys were shipped in refrigerator cars to foreign markets. The prevailing price of the birds was not known Thursday.
Schroeder Bros Department Store in Fredericksburg marks the start of its 19th year with an 18th Anniversary Sale on Friday December 2. Wm Schroeder Sr and his son Clarence Schroeder run the business and expect many shoppers to take advantage of low prices in the weeks before Christmas.
The Fredericksburg Lions Club marked its 10th anniversary with a Ladies and Charter night at the Hotel Nimitz ballroom. Sixty Lions, Lionesses, and guests enjoyed a musical program with piano by Oliver Kowert and vocal and dance numbers performed by local members and guests.
