An editorial praises Hill Country exhibits with Doss Stonewall and Nebgen communities singled out for effort. It urges progress in Gillespie Fredericksburg and respect for workers while criticizing obstructionists and predicting upcoming local improvements and a continued march of progress.
Gillespie County residents over 17 must buy a fishing license to fish in any stream not owned or resided on by the angler. The 55 cent license excludes artificial lure holders and targets anglers using natural bait. Other counties affected include Mason Menard Schleicher Crockett Sutton Kimble Real Edwards and Llano.
A free clinic for crippled children will be held at Memorial Hospital in Houston on Wednesday September 1 from 9 a m to noon. It is open to children not previously attended a clinic and not under current physician care with five orthopedic surgeons examining. Hospitalization not offered that day. fill out forms and get return instructions.
Mrs Irene de Bruyn Robbins widow of Warren Delano Robbins and cousin of President Roosevelt is appointed assistant chief of the foreign service buildings office. She will furnish and decorate U S embassies abroad under a new State Department policy. Her first task is redecorating the American embassy in Cuba ahead of envoy J Butler Wright’s arrival.
Gillespie County’s fifty second annual fair drew well over ten thousand visitors to the exposition grounds over three days. A parade opened the event led by the Fredericksburg Concert Band under G. A. Hartmann. Exhibits from Stonewall Doss Nebgen and Mrs. Adolph G. Wehmeyer earned top prizes.
The Giants beat an All Star Farmer Boys league team 7 to 2 on opening day of the Gillespie County Fair. They dominated five innings before Dummy Collins shut them down, then the Giants exploded with 12 runs in the eighth to trounce the Scipp team.
Congress closed one of its longest sessions after eight months in Washington. Critics gave limited credit for the work amid debates over the Supreme Court issue labor and government reform. A new push to enlarge the Court and farm and wage laws looms if a special session is called. Eleven Texas CCC youths died in a Cody Wyoming forest fire while fighting a blaze. Names include Ernest Seelke Robin D Sherry John B Gerdes Roy Bevens George Rogers Clyde Allen Will G Griffith Mack T Mayabbe and William Whitlock.
Governor Allred announced plans for a special legislative session the week of September 20 to seek additional revenue for the general fund and old age programs. He argued economies won't close the deficit and cited prior appropriations increases and constitutional amendments as contributing factors.
Statewide returns from Dallas show Texans approving six proposed amendments by large margins except the fee system for local officers. About 120 000 to 125 000 ballots were cast, the smallest in 20 years, with Gillespie County reporting 415 votes in a light turnout.
Plans are complete for the 39th Kendall County Fair to be held at Boein on Aug 27 28 and 29. Opening day Friday features judging in all departments. A new 4-H Club exhibits department will be supervised by County Agent L A Rothe. Thoroughbred horse racing is set for Saturday and Sunday with four races Saturday and five Sunday. Saturday is School Children’s Day with a history pageant and other contests. Prizes for exhibits are attractive and farm products displays are expected to be larger and better than before.
Martin Bradshaw of Johnson City Texas, a State Highway Department worker, was seriously injured while repairing a tire when struck by a passing car that fled the scene. His condition is grave with fractured ribs and possible internal injuries. Bradshaw supports a wife and five children. Drivers description could not be given due to darkness and speed. no clue to the hit and run driver.
Mary Lou Weinheimer of Stonewall placed first in the district 4 H bedroom contest as part of a competition involving nineteen counties none of which fully dominates the field. Her room features family pieces dating back to her grandmother with a 100 year old chair refinished and used at her desk as a focal point.
The board restores the $22 per pupil rate amid controversy. Comptroller George H. Sheppard is cited for setting the apportionment back to the July figure, supported by testimony from an injunction case in San Antonio. The vote to set $22 was unanimous, with opponents citing new comptroller testimony on available funds.
Miss Sophie Heep returned from the National Catholic Women's Union Convention in Hartford Connecticut where she served as the Texas lady representative. She also visited Washington D C and attended a Senate session connected with the Black Supreme Court appointment. She noted East conditions and busy factories with more hiring than in 1929. She traveled through Cincinnati and Memphis and visited New York City.
Miss Gene Lauck of Waco is staying with Mr. and Mrs. Leon F. Zwiener as their guest, detailing hospitality arrangements during her visit to the city.
Home demonstration clubs at the 52nd Annual Gillespie County fair show a creditable exhibit with 30 or more jars of canned fruits and vegetables from Albert Stonewall Willow City Palo Alto Doss Harper and Klein Branch. Tomatoes are central to the display and clubs emphasize balanced family food supplies with canned foods supplementing the garden.
Irvin Henderson an Ingram rancher died at Secor Hospital Kerrville from bullets fired in a Saturday night altercation at a filling station outside Will Hope cafe Hope 56 Ingram cafe operator is jailed without charges Henderson was shot in the back side and chest during the struggle for a revolver Hope was taken into custody after sheriff seized a .45 pistol Ross Merritt assisted in getting Henderson to the hospital.
Mrs Willie Neffendorf fell from a bale of hay while searching for eggs at the Petersburg farm. She injured her backbone and is recuperating at a friend’s home in Fredericksburg after receiving medical attention.
Gillespie County district court sentenced six felons to the penitentiary this week for burglary and theft. Five pleas of guilty produced two to five year terms. one youth, Floyd Cauley, received one year for aggravated assault with intent to murder after a shooting at a filling station. All defendants were nonresidents. indictments came from the current term after eleven bills were filed.
The Blanco County three day fair and rodeo began with a Thursday morning parade in Johnson City. Numerous communities entered floats including Rocky Pleasant Hill Round Mountain Cypress Mill Sandy Robinson Millet Creek Little Blanco and Blanco. Livestock and poultry displays carry prizes for best animals with separate awards for 4-H exhibits farm products quilts and flowers. Daily rodeo prizes and grand prizes for top performances are also promised.
Howard Payne College will open September 15 with what is described as one of the largest enrollments in its history. An extensive improvement program is nearly complete, including a new home economics department in a rock cottage lab and modern cooking and sewing facilities. Reservations are coming in daily from across Texas and as far as Pennsylvania and Washington State.
