Cotton stocking designs rise from government study
More than 150 cotton stocking designs are now available as the Beltsville Maryland Bureau of Home Economics reports. Congress funded three years ago to explore cotton for women’s hosiery. designs range from cotton web mesh for evening wear to plain knits for sports and home use. The pieces are knit on full fashioned machines and tested for wear, wash, and look. A 1940 survey found 89 percent of 16 000 full fashioned knits could use cotton. nylon yarns failed at 47 percent. Last year American women bought over 43 million dozen full fashioned stockings. cotton could have saved nearly 300 000 bales of long staple fiber.
