Austin Firm Wins Bid for Llano Highway Bridge
The Collins Construction Company of Austin was the low bidder for the new reinforced concrete and steel bridge across Town Creek in Fredericksburg. The four-span bridge will be longer with a 44 foot roadway and five foot sidewalks on both sides, four feet higher than the old structure. Construction may begin in about 30 days, with traffic detoured over the Adams Street bridge during work.

Two Gillespie County breeders shared in top prizes at the third annual Ram and Billy Show and Sale held by the Jaycees. Victor Marshall of Harper won the Champion Suffolk and grand championship cup. Frances Kott of Morris Ranch won the Champion Delaine and grand champion cup. The sale Sunday reached 101 animals with total $2,573.75, slower than expected due to the goat market.

City Schools Set Dates For Fall Term Opening
Fredericksburg will begin fall classes with Public School opening on Wednesday September 1 and St Marys School on Tuesday September 7. Four Polio Cases Reported In Gillespie County
Four cases of polio have been diagnosed in Gillespie County including two from last week. No Fred cases yet. Two fatalities were Mary Lange 13 and Hubert Mrosek 8, both from Harper. The other two ill are Curtis Carter 13 of Houston and Leslie Esquell 3 of Harper, in San Antonio hospitals. Health officials urge cleanliness and avoiding crowds. Sanitary Engineer R W Wilkinson and Geo W Cox plan protective measures with local leaders. Public funerals for the deceased were approved. Fredericksburg closed the tourist park swimming pool for the season.

Gillespie County Fair Roots Go Back to 1880
The Gillespie County Fair traces origins to 1880 with a Farmers Verein founded July 25, 1880 and incorporated July 18, 1881. The first fair occurred in 1882 after organizing the Gillespie County Fair Association in 1892. Early leaders included E. Kramer and H. Henke. The original Verein dissolved in 1895 as the fair moved ahead with land purchases and new exhibit buildings and a one mile track. (Continued on page 4.)
