Two Old Horses Proved Strays in Maryland County
George Hoffman presented two stray horses before a Justice of the Peace in Maryland County. One is about ten years old, sixteen hands high, with a blaze face and a glass eye, possibly recently worked, and the other is a dark black horse about fourteen hands high with a small star, shod all around with some worn shoes. The entry notes both animals as strays and assigns a value of £850.

The Bag of Gold and the Three Seekers
An old tale from Bologna follows Madonna Lucrezia a widow who falls from fortune to poverty. Three travelers claim a bag of gold, sign a deceptive bond, and vanish. Lucrezia’s daughter Glanette seeks help from Lorenzo Martelli a law student who defends the case with a novel demand that the gold be delivered to all three. The court responds, and Lorenzo’s eloquence secures the treasure for the three who stand forward together, lifting their fortunes.
