FBI Agent Outlines History and Growth of Bureau

Frederick FBI agent Barry O’Neil outlined the bureau’s evolution from 1962 to today at a Rotary Club talk. He noted staff growth from 7,000 agents and 39,000 support workers to 11,000 agents and 15,000 staff, with women now 15 percent. He described reduced centralized control, expanded jurisdiction, new laws, and broader responsibilities. He said competition for jobs remains high with only one in 100 applicants accepted, and spoke of the Frederick office covering Carroll Frederick Washington and Allegany counties. He added he often works weekends, takes cases to completion, and enjoys living in Western Maryland where crime is not rampant.
