The 942 mile US 23 441 link in Jackson County near Franklin is to be paved by late August. If progress continues, the US 25 441 segment from Franklin to Dillsboro should open by late September. Structures on the Jackson project are complete, with stone base being laid in parts and contractor work continuing near Savannah Creek.

Mail Carrier Retires Reflects On End Of Horse And Buggy Route
The retirement of Charlie Rogers, last of the county’s horse and buggy mailmen, recalls 30 years on Route 1 from 1924 to retirement. He misses the people, watching families grow, and notes road progress from 2365 miles to 2969 miles with about 260 patrons. The few remaining horse teams were kept as backups into the 1930s.

A resident priest Father Robert Healy arrived this week at St Francis Catholic Church in Franklin and will also serve St Joseph. He came from Kentucky where one of his three churches was in Franklin. He was installed Sunday afternoon by Father Touts J Bour of Asheville. A farewell for Father Newman and welcome for Father Healy followed with a dinner by parish ladies and music by the Gospel Harmonizers.

Brown places 10th in teen-age driving event in Winston-Salem
