The Baby Derby heats up as Raymond Cleveland takes the Honor Roll lead in Highlands. A tight race with leaders bunched in mile credits amid weekly shakes, promising a dramatic finish next Saturday for a $200 prize and loving cup.
Macon County Council of Social Agencies met Monday evening at Edwards Hotel with Highlands Lions Club for Ladies Night in an event attended by about 50. State board speakers Miss Jane M. H. case consultant and Miss Victoria Bell outlined 18 units aiding child welfare, housing, diet, and state aid for dependent and homeless children. J. B. Napier of Lions Clubs spoke on aid to the blind and vision care, urging public participation to help 15 million needy children. Continued on Page Twelve.
A hot game is promised next Sunday afternoon as Franklin meets Canton on the local field. Canton leads the Industrial League while Franklin, in good shape, hopes to trouble the visitors and push for a breakthrough victory.
Samuel William Womack 75 a well known jeweler died at his East Franklin home Wednesday at 4 am after several months illness. Born in Rutherford County September 23, 1859 he moved to Macon County at age 12 and worked in his father's tannery. He married Lavada Smiley November 10, 1883. Surviving: one daughter Mrs Wade Elliott of Asheville four sons Lyman Andrews Otto Roy and Dewey all of Franklin three brothers Robind Silas J and Anderson Womack. Funeral from home Wednesday at 3 with Rev C F Rogers of Franklin Baptist Church officiating burial in Franklin Cemetery.
Franklin merchants join in an agreement to close all day Tuesday July 4 and urge customers to shop Monday. Peoples Market Dixie Store Sloan's Market A & P Tea Co City Market Cecil Pendergrass Farmers Federation. Roy F. Cunningham will be closed from Monday noon until Wednesday.
The Franklin Lions Club formed at Cagle's restaurant on Friday night June 23 with 20 members present, meeting first and third Thursdays at 7 30 pm. Officers elected include T W Angel Jr president Joel Tompkins first vice president Leo Manley second vice president and Woodrow Reeves third vice president with Rev Frank Bloxham as charter chairman.
The Macon Theatre will begin with a 10 a.m. first show on July 4. The program offers a double feature, Sunset Trail and Never Say Die, with Bob Hope and Martha Raye leading a strong supporting cast.
More than 400 people gathered at Rabun Gap-Nacoochee school to honor pioneer educator W. A. Curtis and unveil a marker recalling the hardships of Reconstruction era. Dr. A J Ritchie praised Curtis for his leadership and lasting legacy, noting the current school stands on his foundation. Continued on Page Ten.
The Blue Sky Boys of Atlanta will appear Saturday evening July 8 at 8 o clock in the Macon County courthouse. Proceeds benefit the Oak Dale school library and playgrounds with the public invited to attend.
