Wiley Clark was elected president of the Methodist Men’s Club at a Tuesday night family night event at Watson Lick. RS Jones becomes vice president as outgoing president, with John Kusterer named secretary treasurer to complete the leadership slate.
A charter has been granted for Macon County Airport Inc a corporation formed by local businessmen to develop Franklin’s 55 acre airport. An organizational meeting is slated this week to elect officers and a board of directors. See No 4 Page 10.
Three men were jailed after arrests for thefts from a Bacon Bargain Store and a Ralph Womack service station. Cash and merchandise valued around 150 dollars were taken in two break-ins. Police also questioned a minor about similar thefts and continued inquiries into additional break-ins at local businesses Enloc Tractor and Vinson Logging. Three men were jailed for stealing equipment from Enloc Tractor and Vinson Logging. Sheriff J Harry Thomas said investigations extended to other break ins and suspects are being questioned.
The cash register at City Market in Franklin was stripped of between $60 and $100 in a break in late Wednesday night or early Thursday morning of last week. Entry was gained by breaking out a pane in the back window of the store, the sheriff's department reported.

Jersey reports say at 1 p.m. yesterday a large search was still under way at Dry Falls for 10 year old Janice McGiverin of Cedar Rapids Iowa who vanished after being seen near the falls. Grim volunteers combed deep pools while dogs and hounds were brought in to trace her presumed route. Janices brother Terry said he saw her at the top of the falls before she disappeared as her father and others stood nearby hoping for her safe return.
Macon County commissioners expect no rate increase for 1956-57 though Baldwin warned unforeseen costs could require a higher levy. The three member board will likely approve a budget similar to 1955-56’s 505 186 dollars as property value rises to about 16 million. A past overrun, caused by 14000 dollar Franklin High gym project, left the county operating in the red since March. John Roane and Wiley Brown sit with chairman W E Baldwin.
A benefit square dance will be sponsored at Slagle Memorial Building this Saturday night by the Northwest Franklin Neighborhood Club. Proceeds will fund development of a recreational area on the Slagle Siler properties near the creamery, a major project for the club. WRINN IN RALEIGH Assistant Agent John J Wrinn is in Raleigh attending special school for extension personnel.
Franklin Future Farmers of America chapter members travel to Raleigh for the annual convention. Fred Deal, recent winner of the supervised farming contest, seeks the American Farmer degree at the national level. Other state contestants include Wayne Gregory, Ily Taylor, Frank Killin, Frank Nolen, and Bruce Howton with advisor Wayne Sutton guiding the group as they compete for top honors and recognition at the convention.
The Franklin Jaycees sponsor a county wide Fourth of July celebration with a 10 a m parade through downtown and a full day program. Events include a Miss 4th of July beauty contest, field events, a double header baseball game at East Franklin School, and floats entry encouraged by local businesses. Prizes funded by the Franklin Chamber of Commerce, with helpers from civic groups and the Rotary Club organizing float work and judges. The parade assembles at 9 30 on West Main Street led by a color guard from the Legion and VFW. The Miss 4th contestants will ride in convertibles, be judged after the parade, and crowned later at East Franklin field with gifts.
A reward of 3100 is offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of an arsonist named W C Smith. An attempt to set fire to a property on Franklin Route 3 near Totla School occurred the night of June 17 while Lloyd Hooper and his family slept inside. The fire was started outside the home, and Hooper reported the incident to the sheriff.
The 90 year old Rev Ibenezer Myers visited Janklin Methodist Church describing a lifetime of ministry and offering a financial stewardship accounting. He recalled twelve hundred memories and cited 5000 professions of faith while noting a brief message titled The Way over an 18 minute address. También accompanied by Mrs Myers and a son and daughter in law.
Mr Myers now retired and living near Lenoir spent the week end at his former residence marked See No 5 Page 10.
