Richmond Virginia reported Macon county has purchased 158684 in Seventh War Loan bonds to date, far short of the 364000 E bond quota and 218000 overall goal. Co chair Gilmer A. Jones urged residents to buy more bonds to support returning soldiers.
Mrs. Waldrop of Harrigan avenue remained resting comfortably after a fall at Franklin Methodist. Margaret Palmer Cunningham, 78, died in St. Joseph’s Asheville hospital after a heart attack, with funeral services held at Franklin Methodist Church. Interment in Franklin cemetery. Surviving children and relatives listed. Funeral directors Bryant in charge. Also notes on preaching at Clark’s Chapel and group quarterly conference at Mt Zion, with Attendees from Franklin circuit and Highlands circuit. Pvt Paul B. Taylor of Bill Jay home on leave after Jump School at Ft. Benning and volunteering for Paratroopers. son of Mrs. and Mrs. James E. Taylor.
Effective July 1 all subscriptions for the Scout and other personnel in the Navy Marine Corps and Coast Guard overseas must be requested by the addressee. This order No 27861 is issued by the Post Office Department at the request of authorities.
W A Goodson announces Standard Oil of New Jersey bought 500000 in North Carolina war bonds under the Seventh War Loan Drive. Macon County quota is 150 with county chairmen urged to finish canvassing and report amounts collected by June 0. Mrs J E S Thorpe and Mrs W V Swann sign as chairs of the Woman's Division.
Charles H. Robertson, collector of Internal Revenue, announced auto used tax stamps in the denomination of $5.00 were placed on post offices and offices of collectors and Internal Revenue on June 9. The stamps will evidence payment of the tax for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 1945, and must be purchased on or before that date. They will be serially numbered and will be gum'ed in the face with provision on the back for entry of the vehicle make, model, serial number and State license number.
Lee Guffey of Franklin chamber joined Ashevi attendees to explore forming a North Carolina Travel Council to boost tourism. The report also covers a successful Day Vacation Bible School at Sloan’s Union Chapel, a Forest City land sale, and remarks on the United Nations Charter by officials in Hendersonville and San Francisco.
Dr E H Blackard, pastor of Myers Park Methodist, Charlotte, will assist in a July 8 to 13 series of special services at Franklin Methodist Church. He formerly led Wesley Memorial in High Point and will speak each evening at 8 oclock Sunday through Friday. The Franklin Lions plan July 9 event featuring Dr Ellen Black Winston, Raleigh, on public welfare topics.
Cpl. Gus L Tallent has arrived safely in the Philippines as reported by his wife Mrs Merle Tallent and his parents Mr and Mrs Lee Tallent of Franklin route 3. He joined the armed forces on September 10 1941 and trained at Drew Field Myrtle Beach Camp Pinedale in Fresco and Kearns Utah. Before service he was employed by the United States Naval Powderary in Indiana Heat Md. He married Miss Merle Clyat of Terra Gis.
Private Corbin, son of Mr and Mrs J M Corbin of Elli Jay in Macon county, served with the Ninth Army in Germany since overseas deployment in December of the previous year. Lieutenant Patton, a 1943 entry, was a B 29 bombardier in the Marianas. Corbin trained at Camp Croft South Carolina and earned the Infantry Combat Badge. Corbin’s wife Miss Josie Eller and two daughters reside in Robbinsville.
Teaching service at Morrison Presbyterian Church Sunday at 3 30 p m, Sunday school at 2 30 p m. Vacation Bible School begins Monday at 8 00 a m continuing two weeks. All children ages 5 15 invited to attend.
