A local Fourth of July celebration marks the signing anniversary with contests and prizes led by the Franklin and Knoxville All-Stars. Events include a greased pig chase, tug of war, egg race, and multiple races on the square. Proceeds partly support the Franklin fire department. merchants sponsor prizes and a 3 pm baseball game at the high school field.

Good Neighbor Motorcade Tour Stops in Town
A 17 car Good Neighbor tour from Western North Carolina counties paused Tuesday afternoon. Dale Stentz, Waynesville chamber of commerce secretary and tour director, said the aim was to foster acquaintance and closer area cooperation in advertising. The Western counties committee organized the tour with J. H. Harwood of Bryson City as temporary chairman and Franklin represented on the committee.

Franklin boy killed after being struck by car
Five year old Jimmy Thoms, son of Mr and Mrs Harry Thomas, died after a car driven by Wiley Bryson of Franklin hit him near his home. Bryson bonded $1,000 for a preliminary hearing. Funeral services were held at Franklin Methodist church with interment in Franklin cemetery.

Red Cross Praise from Washington to Macon War Relief Drive
W Leslie Calhoun special field representative of the American Red Cross visited Franklin Wednesday to commend the Macon County chapter chaired by Harley Cabe for war relief fund efforts. He praised the Franklin Girl Scouts and Junior Red Cross for campaign work. McCabe reported $400.8 of the chapter quota raised to date, with $2550 in contributions listed from local individuals and organizations.

Preliminary 1940 census figures released by Charles I Flack of Asheville show Macon County population at 15 804, up 2 222 from 1930. Farm counts drop by 26 since 1935 but rise 410 since 1930. war figures list 2 257 in 1940, 2 583 in 1935, and 1 847 in 1930. All figures are preliminary and subject to correction.

A large gathering marks the De Soto quadricentennial in Macon County with the unveiling of a marker on U.S. 28 near the Little Tennessee River bridge. Pageant portrays De Soto saga on Macon stage in 16th century pageant
The Macon theatre staged Is Flowing Nest a by-kone Spain era pageant on Wednesday afternoon. Miss Edith Russell of Russell Harrington Studios Asheville directed the production assisted by Mrs. Charles Melichar and Mrs. Benny McGlamery. The show depicted De Soto and his men marching from Florida in search of gold, with sixteen century costumes enhancing the scenes. Fred Heam, a former Ted Shawn dancer, starred as fiesta and Indian dancers, with music by Mary Glass. Russell plans a fuller Saga of De Soto to be presented at future De Soto celebrations in other states.

Annie Mae Browning Dies After Long Illness
Mrs Annie Mae Browning 42 died Tuesday night after an eight month illness. Funeral held Wednesday at 3 o'clock at the Bigalow Beckeney officiated. She was born May 11 1908 in Lenoir and was a member of the Senior Baptist church. Survived by husband Will Browning four stepchildren of Macon county and one sister.
