Benefit Keno Party Planned in Franklin

A keno party to aid the Franklin Girl Scout troop is organized with Kelly's Tea Room donated by Mrs Las sie Kelly Cunningham and Franklin business houses contributing prizes. Prizes include a walnut end table electric toaster five gallons of gasoline cigarettes luncheon tickets and more. Tickets are sold by Boy Scouts and a prize list will be published next week in The Press-Maconian.

Forest Service Transfers Involving Nantahala Cherokee DeSoto

J W Cooper ranger in Franklin Nantahala is to transfer to Hiwassee district Cherokee National Forest in Cleveland Tennessee. He will be replaced by R W Miles of Cherokee Forest. A R Karling, Nantahala accountant, also transfers to DeSoto forest headquarters in Jackson Mississippi, to be replaced by D W Nichols.

North Carolina Forest Improvement Funded At $450,069

An allotment of 450,069 dollars has been allocated to the forest service under the new federal works program for North Carolina. Funds will be used to clear underbrush in national forests improve fire protection facilities and advance other forest improvement projects across the state.

Death Claims Mrs Pierson Highlander Mayor’s Wife

Mrs Marjorie Mardon Pierson 59 died at the Pen e hospital in Atlanta on Friday June 21 after illness. Born March 13 1888 in Monmouth England she moved to Highlands about 29 years ago and married S P Pierson in Cornelia Ga on November 27 1916. Survived by husband and two sons Edward Kendal and Val Stephens funeral held Sunday 11 am at the Episcopal Church of the Incarnation with burial in Highlands Cemetery. Pallbearers named and many out of town friends attended.

Death claims Gray veteran John L Cabe in Macon County

John L Cabe 93 year old Confederate veteran died near Otto after months of illness. He served in B Company 1 39th North Carolina regiment and belonged to Asbury Methodist church. Survived by brother George Cabe and two sons Mell Cabe and Charlie Cabe. Funeral held at Tesenta Methodist church with burial in the church cemetery.

Forest Service Picnic Set For July Fourth At Lake Burton

The Nantahala National Forest plans a Fourth of July picnic at CCC Camp F-10 on Lake Burton in Georgia. About 150 employees are expected to attend.

Number of TVA Test Farms May Be Increased

Possibilities of increasing the number of TVA test farms in Macon county were discussed at a courthouse meeting of township test farm committees. The meeting was addressed by R. W. Shoffner, supervisor of test farms in 150 western counties. There are 12 test farms currently, and officials think the number may be tripled.

Fourth of July Parade and Fireworks Begin Franklin Day Activities

Franklin prepares a full Fourth of July program sponsored by the local Boy Scout troop with a baby and doll parade at 10 30 a m a grand parade at 2 p m music by a caliope and a late evening fire works display on the hill near the schoolhouse A variety show at 8 p m and a Camp Nikwasi dance are planned with other events including contests for girls and boys and a community theatre feature. The colored churches also sponsor a separate July Fourth program including a soccer baseball game at the negro school.
