Independence Day events in Franklin Monday July 5 include a morning program 9 to 12 with races contests and athletic events and free afternoon boxing bouts at the courthouse with a small admission. Proceeds go to the Legion Scout benefit fund. A fireworks display street dancing and a full program will be announced next week.
J G K McClure of Hickory Nut Gap near Asheville received Yale University’s master of arts degree during the Wednesday morning commencement in New Haven. The Farmers Federation and American Forestry Association leader, a Yale 1906 graduate, has long led agricultural and conservation efforts since moving to the region in 1916.
Little Ruby Irene Rickman six weeks old died at home in West Mill Tuesday afternoon after a weeklong stomach infection. Funeral services were held at Cowee Baptist church Wednesday at 3 o clock with Rev. N E Holden in charge. Survived by parents Mr. and Mrs Joe Rickman three brothers Ervin Edward Cecil grandparents Mr and Mrs R R Rickman Wests Mill and Mr and Mrs C H Sawyer Brasstown and several uncles and aunts.

Henry Oldham, 21, of Winston-Salem, was shot in the left arm by guard J. C. Bromy while working on a road near Briartown in Macon county. Convicted in Rowan county for robbery with firearms, he received a 10 to 15 year sentence and entered Franklin state prison camp on May 5, 1937. He is under treatment in the camp hospital. Son of Mrs. Lucy J. Barley of Winston-Salem.
William Alfred McGaha aged 72 died at his home at West's Mill at 8 30 Thursday night June 17 after months of heart trouble and a kidney infection. The Cowee Baptist church funeral was led by Rev R F Mayberry assisted by Rev C C Herbert with Junior Order of United American Mechanics conducting graveside rites. He was born May 2 1865, lived mainly at West's Mill, and survived by his widow Jennie Morrison two sons F P McGaha of Seattle and J Fred McGaha of West's Mill a daughter Mrs Lester S Conley of Franklin a sister Mrs Joseph Shepherd and four grandchildren.
Ernest Hinson has arrived in Murphy to serve as sub district forester for eight counties in NC and GA. He will work with county agents on reforestation and soil erosion projects covering Cherokee Clay Graham Macon Swain in North Carolina and Union Towns Fanning in Georgia.
Senator Josiah W. Bailey denounces the relief measure after it passed the Senate, saying advocates won an emphatic victory. He criticizes the bill as spending policy rather than reform and reiterates his opposition to taxpayers funding the plan. Bailey had previously blasted Governor Earle over troop use in Pennsylvania.
County workers joined by the Woman's Home Demonstration club and Recreation committee are erecting curb market stalls and a playground along Main to Church streets. The project, led by Mrs. T. J. O'Neil, aims to shelter the successful Saturday market and foster a revived community recreation center with tennis, croquet, and softball facilities ready soon.

Unofficial counts from 43 Wake county precincts show wets leading by 1372 votes. Total ballots favoring county control were 7,932 to 6,560 against with Raleigh voting wet by 2161, while outside precincts favored the drys by 1211.
M D Billings will begin next week the erection of a second story on his building across the street from the courthouse. The A and P store Nantahala Power and Light company John Moore and the City Market now occupy the building. The new structure will house 12 modern office rooms and enhance the business district.
James Marion McConnell, 73, died Tuesday at 6 o clock after a monthlong hospital stay following an unsuccessful operation. Cause was Brights disease. He was a noted local farmer and Union Methodist steward. Survived by widow Carrie Hopkins, two sons Morris and John, daughter Mrs Claude Thompson, nine grandchildren, and brother Charlie McConnell. Services at Union Methodist Church Tuesday at 4 pm, Rev. O E Croy officiating.
In Raleigh on June 25 the attorney general ruled that only Grade A eating places may serve wine. State health officer Dr. Carl V. Reynolds issued a formal statement stressing the board of health’s focus on cafe ratings to protect public health. He noted counties without health departments struggle to obtain Grade A milk inspections and warned establishments must source Grade A milk or risk lower ratings. The ruling will be enforced strictly.

Assistant forest supervisors and fire assistants from 11 southern states began a twelve day training conference in Franklin at the Franklin Terrace on June 14. Joseph C Kircher opened with remarks stressing trained personnel for efficient forestry work across fire control, road construction, timber and game management, and CCC training support. Attendees include leaders from Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, North Carolina, Arkansas, South Carolina, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas and colleagues from the forest service and CCC units.
Governor Clyde R. Hoey and a panel of prominent North Carolinians including W. P. Stacy Henry M. London Walter Murphy Thomas J. Gold John J. Parker E. Y. Webb A. D. MacLean Isaac C. Wright W. Jon and J. G. Merrimon were appointed to cooperate with the national commission on plans to observe the 150th anniversary of the U S Constitution.
Nurses employed by the state board of health met in Raleigh for their annual conference. They discussed future plans, report revision, and coordination while at the state health building with Dr. Carl Reynolds and Dr. G. M. Cooper, leaders in preventive medicine and public health.
