Nantahala county board approves veteran officer funding
The Nantahala County Board of Commissioners met to approve a 1,000 annual appropriation for a fulltime county veteran service officer position to be held by Tony Welch, following recommendations from local American Legion posts. The welfare department budget rose about 100, and the forest fire fund was increased from 1,000 to 1,200. A road project involving the Nantahala Power Company frontage was tentatively approved pending state takeover.

Major Fred Judson Gray of Macon County, aged 26, killed over Germany, was buried at National Cemetery Salisbury with family from Delaware Water Gap Demorest Winston-Salem and others attending. A native of the county, he was born December 15, 1917, Clemson graduate, army air forces flying cadet, wings and second lieutenant at Kelly Field April 1941, served as flight instructor, squadron commander in 1943, served in England 1944, awarded Purple Heart posthumously.
