Death claims Dr. Waldroup in Bryson City office

Dr. Rufus M. Waldroup a prominent Bryson City dentist and property owner died suddenly at 5 40 after suffering a heart attack while at the office of Dr. D R Bryson He moved to Bryson City 25 years ago and owned the Bryson City Ice company the Cordell hotel and other properties He leaves a widow and several relatives Funeral services were held in Bryson City and the body brought to Franklin for interment in the Franklin cemetery

Mrs. R. M. Hudson Sails for Europe on Georgia Liner

Franklin friends learn Mrs. R. M. Hudson will sail from New York on Saturday June 25 aboard the Georgia for a European tour. She plans England Belgium Holland Switzerland Germany Italy and France visits with a return in August aboard the Queen Mary. Hudson formerly taught in Franklin schools and has many local friends hoping for a safe voyage.

Funeral for Fred V. Stiles in California church grave

Fred Verrol Stiles 2percent died at his brother J B Stiles home in Redding California Sunday morning. Funeral services were held at Coweta Baptist church with Rev J A Flanagan and other ministers in charge. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Stiles had gone to California for melanosarcoma treatment and had been with Coweta Baptist church since boyhood. Pallbearers were six nephews including William Cunningham and Harry Stiles.

Mrs Paul Love Dies After Illness at 24

Mrs. Paul Love, 24, died Monday morning at Angel hospital after an operation Sunday night. She lived on Highway No. 28, three miles east of Franklin, and had been ill since Friday. Funeral services were held at Bethel Methodist church Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. Interment followed in the church cemetery. She was the former Olliff Byrd of Savannah Georgia. Surviving: her husband a young daughter Charlotte and sister Mrs Charlotte Stephen son of Jacksonville Florida who attended the funeral. Pallbearers were Boise Hall Claude Scott Jack Talley Jr Fred Horne Herman Talley Jasper McCall.

S S Association To Meet At Cowee Sunday

The Macon County Baptist Sunday School Association will meet at Cowee Baptist Church six miles north of Franklin on Highway 286 Sunday at 2 30 PM. It is a joint convention with Swain county Sunday schools and a large crowd is expected from Swain and Macon counties. Pastors and teachers are invited to share methods and Browning Swain county superintendent will speak on their association’s success.

The Franklin P.-T. A. will host a banco party at the American Legion hall on Thursday evening June 30 starting at 7 45. Regular admission of 25 cents will be charged.

Baby Born in Ambulance During Hospital Run

An ambulance crew rushing from Angel hospital to East Franklin delivered a baby girl or boy in the vehicle. The mother Mrs M F Smith and infant are reported well, with both doing fine after the 2:30 AM call last Monday morning.

Louis Knocks Schmeling Out at Yankee Stadium

Joe Louis, the 24 year old American champion from Alabama, defeated Max Schmeling in two minutes and four seconds at Yankee Stadium to retain the heavyweight crown. Schmeling showed early bravado but laments faded as Louis dominated from the opening exchange, delivering a decisive right hand that left Schmeling unable to rise before the towel ended the bout.

Death of G L Nichols in Jones Creek community

George Luther Nichols died at his home in the Jones Creek community on Friday morning June 17 at 6 30 after an illness of two weeks. He died three days before his 78th birthday from complications. Funeral services were held at Gillespie Chapel at 4 pm conducted by the church pastor. He is survived by one sister Mrs Zetta Ledford of Easley South Carolina and a number of nieces and nephews. His wife preceded him to the grave years ago.

Woman appointed Jackson County sheriff after fatal shooting

Mrs. Mason, of Dillsboro, named Jackson County sheriff to fill the term after Sheriff Mason was killed while serving sanity hearing papers on Donald Ashe. Ashe then killed himself. Official board members include J. D. Cowan, Cleve Fisher, and R. C. Howell. She serves until December 1. The late sheriff was nominated in June as the Democratic candidate to succeed himself. The county Democratic committee will select a new nominee soon.

Officers for Legion Post Elected in Macon County

At a Macon County Post of the American Legion meeting in the Legion hall on Monday night officers were elected for the year: John Wasilik Jr commander, Adolph Zoellner vice commander, A R Higdon adjutant and finance officer, C Tom Bryson service officer, Tom Moss sergeant at arms, Rev J A Flanagan chaplain, Dr N G Williams child welfare officer, Samuel J Murray registration officer. Wasilik Higdon and Zoellner were named as delegates to the twentieth annual convention of the American Legion department of North Carolina to be held in Winston Salem on June 27 and 28.

Baseball Duel Set For Next Sunday At Local Field

The Franklin team will face the Cornelia nine at 3 p m next Sunday on the high school athletic field after last Sunday’s rainout with Cashiers. Fans are urged to attend and see real baseball.

Dr Angel Named Director of NC Hospital Association

Dr Furman Angel has been named one of ten directors of the North Carolina Hospital Association. He will oversee District No 10, which includes Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Swain, Macon, Jackson, Transylvania, and Buncombe counties.

Mrs Alba Moore Love 79 died Wednesday night at 8 at her daughter’s home in Franklin after six months of heart trouble. Born March 25 1859 she spent her life in Macon County and was a Methodist. The market has climbed for three days with factors including higher zinc lead and export copper prices. Steel mill activity and optimistic steel industry outlooks support growth. Jefferson Davis Pageant Delights Local Audience

The Macon County Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy presented a Jefferson Davis pageant in the courthouse Monday evening. Mrs. W. A. Hyatt opened the program with a sketch of Jefferson Davis life and the transcontinental highway memorial. Chapter members portrayed the 14 states represented by the highway and thanked the public for its cooperation.
