Prisoner Shot Guardsman After Escape Attempt In Camp
Prison guard William R. Anderson said Roy L. Scarborough, age seventeen, was agitated into attacking him during an escape bid at Cat Creek road camp. Scarborough, serving for false pretence and larceny, reportedly fired a 38 caliber pistol injuring Anderson while another guard recovered a chest wound. Camp superintendent John E. Catshall noted two confessions and possible aiding and abetting charges amid ongoing investigations. Anderson remains hospitalized in serious condition.

Resigns As Agent Here In County Work Force Changes
James G. Flanagan, assistant county agent for over a year and a half, resigns to attend summer school at the University of Georgia Athens. A Clemson College graduate from Clover South Carolina he served since September 1954. His wife Carolyn B. Flanagan taught at Coween School this past year. The county agent said a successor has not been chosen. Margret Wilson is named as counselor at Nsatake Junaluska for a workshop line of inference seniors.

Franklin to Stage County Fourth of July Celebration
A county wide Fourth of July celebration will be staged in Franklin this year. The Franklin Jaycees lead the plan with help from other groups, featuring a parade, beauty contest, and field events in the morning, plus a Little League double header in the afternoon at East Franklin School. The committee is led by Robert C. Carpenter with prizes raised by the Franklin Chamber of Commerce. The beauty contest will be run by the Franklin Junior Woman's Club, president Margie Cabe.

Orr resigns as director of FHS band
Franklin High band director Orr resigns after two years to take a director position at Glen Alpine High School in Rear Morganton. He plans to move with his family in late August. Orr, born in Asheville, previously led Elkin’s band and rebuilt Franklin High’s program after the gymnasium fire.

Boy Bound Over In Rifle Death
A 17 year old Cowee youth James Dudley Mathis was bound over to Superior Court for trial on a charge of murdering his father with a .22 rifle on a mountainside above their home near Matlock Branch on June 12. The preliminary hearing in which Sheriff J. Harry Thomas and Deputy Newell Pendergrass testified showed the boy claimed the shooting was accidental. Authorities found the elder Mathis, William A. Mathis, slumped over a 12 gauge shotgun with a .22 caliber wound in the head about a mile above the home. The boy reported the death and later contradicted his initial statements, with witnesses noting he often twisted his stories during questioning. The case proceeds to the August session of Superior Court for final determinations.

Revival Services Draw Large Nightly Crowds in Franklin
About 375 people attend the interdenominational revival at Friendship Tabernacle in Franklin each night. The series began Sunday and continues Friday with guest minister Rev. Herman Duncan of First Methodist Church in Lenoir. A 70 voice county choir, directed by Lowell McKee, performs nightly, with Mrs Haughton Williams on piano.
