More than 10 cattle sold at stock auction as Franklin Live Stock Auction conducted its inaugural sale at newly erected stock pens on the Georgia road. B. V. Mecay manages the firm with sales planned every Wednesday. top prices included veal calves at 24.80 per cwt and fat cows up to 18.00, yearlings to 160, and steers averaging 13.50. Patrons included J. Franklin and sons, Ralph Bradley, Ralph Penland, L. Simmons, and Gene Baldwin. Bob Patton served as auctioneer.

Water safety program starts July 14 at Macon Red Cross
The Macon County Red Cross executive committee announced a July 14 to 25 swimming instructors class led by James Davis to train county instructors. The program, aimed at teaching swimming to youths and establishing a county wide water safety effort, will use Arrowood Glade and outdoor facilities provided by the Nantahala National Forest. James Hauser was named water safety chairman and Davis will teach the course, open to anyone 18+ who can swim, with later classes for youngsters planned.
