Franklin civic representatives met on Tuesday night June 18 to map an Old Fourth celebration. The plan includes greasy pole greasy pig foot races three legged race and turtle race each with a prize plus surprises. An extra special baseball game and square dance are hoped for as training begins for contestants. Milton Sanders Is Third In MIT Class Of 60
Milton Sanders son of Mr and Mrs Jack Sanders earned a Bachelor of Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology last week, graduating third in a class of 60 in electrical engineering with highest honors. He earned prior honors at N C State where he studied two years before MIT. He will report for special duty in the Navy Department for National Defense work on July 1.

Mrs Mary Etta Queen Rites In Oak Grove
Mrs Mary Etta Queen 77 died Monday afternoon at home from a stroke suffered earlier. Lifelong county resident, daughter of Dennis and Mary Tippett, born January 84, married S Queen in 1880, taught at Oak Grove Baptist Church. Funeral Thursday at 1 pm at the church with Rev Robert Williams and Rev W L Bradley officiating. Burial in church cemetery. Pallbearers were nephews Edgar Queen Gordon Arvey Don Burnette Fred Queen Paul Arvey Grady Burnette. Survived by husband four children three daughters Haskell Arvey Fred Barnette Will Clark one son TH Queen two sisters Buell Dalton and Mrs Robert Painter, 35 grandchildren 45 great grandchildren.

Emory McDonald to be laid to rest in Louisa Churchyard
Funeral services for Emory McDonald will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Louisa Methodist church on Cartoogechaye with the Rev. Philip L. Green presiding. Interment follows in the church cemetery. A former Macon County resident, he died Monday from a heart attack while working on a construction job at Oteen and had lived in Asheville for years. Surviving are three children including son Clarence of Elma Washington and daughters Kathleen and Margaret in Asheville.

Fire Damages Wayah Sign Shop Nearly 3000 Dollars
A late Monday fire at the Wayah Supply Depot sign shop caused about 3000 dollars in damage, confined to the building. Nantahala Forest Service officials praised the extinguisher team and reported most supplies and equipment saved. Franklin and Sylva fire departments assisted but were not needed once the blaze was controlled.

Hughes Slavers Given Long Prison Sentences
