More than 200 Macon pupils are prepared for ninth grade next fall across eight county schools. Promotions vary by school with 4 boys and 100 girls in specific divisions, Franklin reporting 62 boys and 32 girls, Highlands 12 boys and 14 girls, Otter Creek 4 boys and 7 girls, Gowee 10 boys and 14 girls, Slagle 5 boys and 14 girls, Higaonville 9 boys and 9 girls, Iotia 12 boys and 2 girls, and Chapel 2 boys and 3 girls. Some schools held move-up ceremonies while others issued certificates, as the district shifts toward a continuous K through 12 process. At Franklin the top three metro achievement scorers were Charlotte Lave, Big Soles, and Richard Jones Jr. At Otter Creek S J Waters was named valedictorian with 8th graders recognized for scholarship, citizenship, perfect attendance, and activities.

Eastern Star Honor Given Mrs. M Cabe in NC district
Mrs Margaret Cabe of Franklin was named deputy grand matron of the Order of the Eastern Star for the 17th North Carolina district at the Asheville four day state meeting closing last week. Cabe, an employee of Nantahala Power and Light and wife of Carl Cabe, becomes the third local CBS Nequassa Chapter No 6 member to receive the honor. She has long served Nequassa chapter in multiple posts and earlier was worthy matron in 1941 42. Local chapter attendees at Asheville included Grace O Mohundro and other officers and members who participated in sessions and ceremonies.

May 29 Election County Pays Precinct Officials and Clerks
The county reports payments to precinct officials and clerks for the May 29 election totaling $24,850 to staff and $3,092 for printing and binding. Highway and Public Works commission outlines plans to widen routes from the Jackson County line to Franklin and other sections. About eight projects, including four asphaltic roads totaling 15.33 miles, are proposed for this year with a $31,430 cost for those sections. The body of 20 year old Sgt. William R. Deal, killed June 14 1944 in the Invasion of France, was laid to rest at Holly Springs Baptist Church after military rites. Service at 2 30 p m officiated by Rev W C Pipes and Rev Charles Parker with the local American Legion in charge. He left a mother Mrs J B Deal and two brothers Jay and Astor Deal along with five sisters. The Bryant funeral home arranged the services.
