The Esso Boosters club representing Standard Oil officials sales agents and service managers in the Hendersonville district met in Franklin on Wednesday June 9 with seven counties represented and 65 in attendance for their annual field day. Morning motion picture at Macon Theatre banquet at Franklin golf and country club with J S Conley presiding. Afternoon golf swimming tennis bridge and trip to Wayah Bald followed by thanks to Franklin citizens for hospitality.

The Farmers Federation of Macon County held its quarterly meeting at the federation warehouse in Franklin. Assistant general manager Guy M. Sales and education director Vance A. Browning attended and reported spring business gains of six thousand dollars over last year. A county wide farmers picnic was decided, to be held in Franklin with date to be announced.

A group from Franklin chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star attended the 32nd session grand chapter in Asheville held Thursday. In the past year Franklin earned three grand honors with Mrs. J. C. Barrington named assistant grand marshal in 1936, Elizabeth Slagle serving as page, and Slagle also named grand Adab for 1937.

Lightning Kills Fine Cow During Storm Near Franklin
A thoroughbred Guernsey cow owned by John F. Cunningham of Franklin Route 1 was struck and killed during an electrical storm Tuesday at about 1 o'clock. The cow was young and produced four gallons of milk daily.

Car Crash Injures Franklin Family Near Wayah Creek
Mr and Mrs Clarence Phillips and their five year old son George were severely injured when their car overturned twice on Wayah road nine miles from Franklin near Miss Annie Slagle s home. The family, returning from Wayah Bald, was treated at Angel hospital. George suffered brain concussion. Mrs Phillips three broken ribs. Mr Phillips a fractured knee cap. Two other children unharmed. A two month old daughter washed from the car and carried downstream about 50 feet but recovered with no apparent injury.

Deep Gap Camp Open For Use In Nantahala Forest
Deep Gap campground at the foot of Standing Indian mountain in the Nantahala National Forest is now open for public use. The site includes camping and picnicking facilities, a forest service road to U S 64 near Rainbow Springs, trails to Standing Indian Pickins Nose High Falls and the Tallulah river headwaters, planted purple rhododendron, the Appalachian Trail passes through, and two Adirondack style leantos for hikers.

The Macon County American Legion commander announced that the Legion and the Boy Scouts will sponsor an Independence Day celebration in Franklin this year. Since July 4 falls on Sunday, the event will be held Monday July 5 with the full program to be announced later.

Dillard Man Found Dead Near Smiths Bridge Township
Lawrence Webb of Dillard Ga was found dead near Commissioner's in Smiths Bridge at dusk. An entire 1p gunshot entry to the forehead with the gun at his feet caused an inquest verdict that Webb died by his own hand possibly accidental or intentional. Webb had borrowed a gun from Lester Greene after visiting the Greene home and planned to hunt squirrels before returning to work in the corn field. The sheriff, deputy, coroner and court clerk assisted in the investigation, and Webb’s body was sent to his family for burial.

Gibson Reunion Celebrates 97th Birthday At West's Mill
The Gibson reunion gathered about 250 relatives and friends at S. C. Leatherman’s West's Mill home. Aunt Betsy Jane Grant, 97, could not attend due to illness. Speakers included Judge John Harwood and Vance A. Browning. Duets by Pauline and A. L. Smiley of Bryson City, with music from Swain Jackson and Macon counties. Mrs. Ray Gibson won a candy box for closest estimate of 1,216 descendants. The three sisters present were Mrs. Margaret Carter, Mrs. Fannie Dillard, and Mrs. Nancy Cardon. Next year’s reunion will be hosted by Mrs. Cardon on the second Sunday in June.
