Highlands officers investigate a break-in at a resort home similar to a prior year entry. Sheriff J Harry Thomas notes entry by cutting a bathroom window screen in the same location as last year. Investigators are determining items taken as they review the scene.
Franklin Featuelin baseball team opens with a Sunday game at 2 20 p m in Highlands Grady with Corbin as playing manager and J D Gibson as business manager. Managers invite tryouts for all interested. Practice sessions set Wednesdays at 4 30 p m and Saturdays at 2 30 p m at the high school stadium.
On a Saturday morning at the Franklin Street corner a woman laments the expense of Centennial dresses and suggests shaving off shoulder straps from her slip to save material.
The annual 4 H dress review in Franklin selected senior and junior winners with blue red and white awards for nightwear sportswear school dress and best dress. Peggy Jean Moore Nancy Berry Ruth Ann Shepherd and others placed under judges Miss Jean Childers Mrs Barbara Hunnicutt and Mrs Graham Grindstaff.
The American Legion Auxiliary will install new officers Tuesday at 7 PM during its annual dinner at Slagle Memorial Building. Immediate past commander John L. Crawford will perform the installation for officers including President Mrs Reid Womack and others, with a covered dish supper and hostesses listed.
Meadows is elected commander of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars post for 1055-56. Elected with him were Victor H. Perry as senior vice commander T Hi Fagg as junior vice commander LB Welch as quartermaster C Banks Finger as post advocate Rev R D Burnette as chaplain Dr Joseph W Kahn as post surgeon and Jack Ragan as three year trustee. Installation is set for June 22 at the post home on Palmer street.
Mebane's George Berns Cook, famed for bushy whiskers, headlines as the hairy keeper of Ramases the UNC football mascot. He has spent days at the centennial kickoff, planned to reveal bewhiskered looks to Franklin wives and celebrate a six year growth milestone.
A 35 gallon still was destroyed Monday in the Nantahala area according to Sheriff J Harry Thomas The small unit in the Dick s Creek area near Morganeit was not operating at the time and no arrest was made Five barrels of mash and other distilling equipment were dumped The report notes no injuries and lists names C Jack Kagan and James E Perry Jr as attendees at a state encampment in Durham on the prior weekend.
Burlington Operating From Plant Seerik is now operating completely from its newly opened hosiery plant just outside Franklin. The final switch from downtown offices in the Nantahala Building took place Saturday. Rucker, office manager and personnel director, noted that all interviews with applicants cleared through the Employment Security Commission are now at the plant offices. The company had occupied the Nantahala Building second-floor offices since mid-April. Production on a limited scale began at the plant May 30.
Mrs Slagle assumes duties as president of the local VFW Auxiliary after an installation ceremony Monday evening. A covered dish supper preceded the ceremony. Installing officer was Mrs Li ellie Angel. New officers include Mrs James E Perry Jr as senior vice president and several others in roles such as junior vice president treasurer and secretary. The new president succeeds Mrs Elizabeth McCollum.
38 young ladies compete in the Miss Centennial contest today led by Miss Hodges. Prizes include cash and merchandise from local merchants. The gala program features a dedication of the Municipal building, a time capsule burial, and a 1858 themed parade and events with contests, parades, and a square dance on the town square.
Twenty two boys from this county leave Monday afternoon for a week at Camp Schaub near Waynesville. They will return Saturday.
