Sheriff C. C. Mason of Jackson County was killed at 9 30 am by Donald Ashe a man with a troubled history who later killed himself. Ashe had been in an asylum and warned against approaching his residence. Mason a popular county officer had just been renominated for another term by the county voters.

Trail Club Hikers From Georgia Visit Franklin
Twenty three members of the Appalachian Trail club of Georgia spent a Franklin weekend hiking a five mile Nantahala National Forest section from Wayah Bald to Burningtown Gap with Trimont Inn as headquarters. A CCC film by Dr H R Halsey entertained, as officers and members from Georgia and North Carolina joined in the outing.

Annual Gibson Reunion Held at Leatherman Home
The Gibson reunion gathered about 300 relatives and guests at Mrs. Nancy Cardon’s Leatherman home to honor Rev. Samuel Gibson. A Sunday school lesson by A. L. Smiley, music by Cardon and Smiley families, and a noon picnic followed. Edith Smiley won a candy jar prize guessing 1255 descendants of Samuelyn. John E. Rickman won the candy. The Cardon home hosts the event, with Cardon as Rev. Samuel Gibson’s granddaughter and surviving siblings listed. The reunion plans to move next year to the home of Garland Gibson in Bryson City.
