Detour signs go up as the five mile Franklin to Feisty Branch section of US 23 441 progresses toward a new link with US 64 and NC 106. Division Engineer C W Lee cites right of way delays resolved and Georgia and North Carolina officials detouring traffic via Ga 246 NC 106 Highlands and US 64 Franklin. Machinery began grading on the Georgia end with W E Graham and Sons moving in last week.

Frankin's annual auterde guest minister series opens
Rev Herman P Duncan of First Methodist Church Lenoir will preach nightly at 8 o'clock through Friday June 22. A county choir rehearses for each night and Lowell McKee leads final prep at the tabernacle Sunday at 2 30. Duncan has served since 1925 in the Western North Carolina Methodist Conference with posts at Horseshoe Asheboro and Concord and six years as Greensboro district superintendent.

Paving Work Under Way In Franklin Streets
Franklin town officials report this year’s paving program will cost about $10.00 with Powell Bill funds. Four projects from 1955 are currently under construction, including segments of White Oak Street Rogers Hill Church Street extension Gaston Street and sections of Forest Avenue First Street and Watauga. Allison Construction Company handles the paving work.

Goins Named Sanford Camp Superintendent
John W. Goins has been transferred to a prison camp at Sanford as superintendent. He had served as assistant superintendent to John Catshall at the Macon camp since May 1955.

Prison guard wounded in shooting on Cat Creek Road
Guard William R Anderson remained in serious condition at Angel Hospital after a pistol wound from a .38 caliber gun in the hands of 17 year old prisoner Roy Scarborough of Buncombe County. The shooting occurred about 11 15 am on Cat Creek Road with Anderson struck in the chest and bullet exiting beneath the left shoulder blade per Dr J W Kahn.

Boy Jailed In Shooting Of Father In Mountain Home
A one year old Cowee boy was jailed on an open charge after authorities investigated the rifle death of his father, farmer William A Mathis, found slumped over a 12 gauge shotgun with a 22 caliber wound. The youth James Dudley said he accidentally shot him mistaking him for a groundhog. Deputy Sheriff Newell Pendergrass was first on the scene and the coroner’s jury impaneled by Coroner C Jack Ragan heard details from the boy and a neighbor. The body lay about a mile above the Mathis home in Matlock Branch.
