Graves to Speak at De Soto Celebration in Franklin

John Temple Graves is slated to address the De Soto celebration in Franklin on June 25 at noon near the Little Tennessee river bridge on U S Highway 23. Invitations have gone to North Carolina leaders, and the pageant Saga of De Soto will follow at the Macon Theatre with local volunteer participants and authentic conquistador costumes.

Federal power panel OKs Nantahala Glenville hydro dams plan

The Federal Power Commission approved Nantahala Power and Light's two hydroelectric projects on the Little Tennessee river in western North Carolina. Nantahala in Macon county and Glenville in Jackson county would create water storage lakes, add 364000 horsepower, and be built with earth-filled rock foundations by the company.

Legion Picnic at Cliffside Lake Draws Veterans Guests

On Sunday June 16 the American Legion and Legion Auxiliary will host their annual picnic at Cliffside Lake with commanders adjutants and guests from Brynton City Andrews Murphy Waynesville and nearby. Ex soldiers and families without conveyances are asked to meet at the courthouse at 10 30 am for transport. The Franklin Boomers, new club of Clark's Chapel, defeated Shortoff 28 to 0 on the Clark's Chapel diamond before a large crowd. William Pierce Deal 87 dies in Holly Springs home

William Pierce Deal 87 died at his Holly Springs home Saturday afternoon after a six month illness. A lifelong farmer and community figure, he married Lydia Berry in 1883, who preceded him in death. Funeral services were held Sunday at Holly Springs Baptist Church with Rev. James Vinson and others officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery while nephews served as pallbearers.
